No matter how advanced an online marketer considers themselves to be, he/she will always benefit
from having a well defined customer avatar at the center of their campaign efforts. Coined by the
legendary marketer Frank Kern, a “customer avatar” is exactly what is sounds like – a complete
digital representation of what your target customer will be like. Beyond simply knowing their
gender, race, and all the other basic demographics information, online marketers need to have a
solid idea of what their customers like to eat, how much they spend when they shop, how many kids
do they have, and numerous other intimate details that make the difference between night and day
when running a successful campaign. It's easy to get overwhelmed, especially if you're doing this

1.) Treat Your Customer Avatar Like A Real Person

Don't treat the data you collect as just another file in your hard-drive. Treat your file as a bona fide
identification card of an actual existing person. Not only will this help your communication skills
when you actually do have to address your target audience, it will also give you a direct access into
their minds without necessarily having to conduct an extensive survey. It's remarkable what our
minds can discover when we take the time to mentally process our goals. Then ask yourself, what
qualities does this individual have? What makes him/her special? How will you help them to
succeed? Why do they respect your opinion above and beyond everyone else? Don't hesitate to
elaborate even more.

2.) Customer Avatars Help You Focus On The Right People

… while getting rid of the time wasters and energy suckers. It's no secret that marketing, when done
wrong, can be one of the most dreadfully boring and repetitive ways to make money. These effects
are compounded when you have to deal with a nuisance customer that seems to inadvertently hog
