Alternative Energy
1. Or any energy source alternative to the
fossil fuels we rely on today
Presentation by Madeline Osman
2. *Local jobs created
*Our energy supply becomes more
diversified
*The United States economy
becomes more secure
*Less air pollution
*Energy costs are reduced from
competing energy providers
Solutions gained
by alternative
fuel usage
*As population grows, so does
energy usage
*Fossil fuels are nonrenewable and
fast declining
*The United States relies heavily on
fuel importation
*Fossil fuel usage is linked to
increased global warming
*Energy costs a lot to produce from
its raw form to the form we use
3. Global warming can be prevented with alternative energy use.
But in the meantime, here are some problems it causes:
Increasingly violent weather
Rising sea levels
Higher average global temperature
5. Advantages
The PV cell converts light energy
to electrical energy by a process
known as the photovoltaic effect.
Sunlight hits the PV cell and the
light energy is transformed into
A raw electrical signal.
Disadvantages
*Renewable resource
*No water or air pollution, no
chemical reaction
*Very efficient for heating and
lighting
*Energy can’t be produced
if the sun isn’t shining or is
covered up
*Expensive
Though the initial start up
costs are steep, as
technology improves, solar
energy has the potential to
be cheaper than traditional
electricity within the
decade
6. Advantages
Hydropower is created with flowing
water to create energy. Through a process
of releasing water from a reservoir into a
turbine and spinning it, a generator is
activated to produce energy. Typically,
this is done using a dam.
Disadvantages
*Energy can be constantly
produced
*No pollution
*Renewable
*Expensive
*Necessity of consistent,
powerful water supplyNorway gets all of its
Electrical production from
Hydropower.
7. Advantages
Wind turbines are powered by the wind
which propels the blades and in turn,
generates electricity. The wind needs
to be reaching speeds of at least 10 MPH
to be fast and powerful enough for
electricity to be powered.
Disadvantages
*Produces no pollution
*Renewable resource
*Turbines can be built off shore
or on shared land
*Dependence on strong
wind force
*Affects visual aesthetic
Turbines are essentially
Maintenance free.
8. Advantages
Geothermal heat is the heat within the Earth.
This heat is available by a process of drilling
until hot steam or water is reached in a
permeable reservoir, then is transferred through
a pipeline to the surface where it is then
converted into electricity. The cooled by product
is pumped back into the reservoir and the process
is repeated.
Disadvantages
If people could utilize all
the heat stored within the
Earth, it would provide a
global energy supply for the
next 20 billion years
*Produces no harmful
by-products
*Once the system is
built, its self-sufficient
*Power plants are small
and don’t disrupt
natural environment
*Incorrectly done can
cause pollutants
*Sites can run out of
steam
9. Advantages
Fuel is derived from Biomass:
recently living organisms or
their metabolic byproducts
Disadvantages
Though the combustion of
biomass puts out carbon, it
doesn’t increase the amount
already in the atmosphere
(because it was recently
contained in plants)
*Renewable
*Don’t need to rely on
other countries to produce
*Can be converted directly
into liquid fuel
*Pollution as byproduct
*Costs a lot of energy to
produce
