Socrates was born in Athens in 469 BCE and originally worked as a sculptor. He is known for practicing the Socratic method of questioning beliefs and exposing inconsistencies. In 399 BCE, Socrates was tried and convicted for corrupting the youth and impiety. The most damaging accusation against him was his association with Critias. He was sentenced to death by hemlock poisoning. Socrates' teachings and philosophy had a lasting influence on Western thought.

In 404 the Thirty Tyrants wanted to ensure the loyalty of those opposed to them by making them complicit in their activities. Socrates and four others were ordered to bring Leon of Salamis from his home for unjust execution. Socrates quietly refused, his death averted only by the overthrow of the Tyrants soon afterwards.

Which to the better fate is known only to God.“ His final hours were spent in an Athenian jail cell. Athenian law required death sentence to be by hemlock.
