2. However, even though the
main feature movie takes
up the main space on the
page, its not the only
movie advertised. Other
movies are recommended
on the side of the page
however they only take up
small amounts of room.
Certain features on the
page look as though they
have been placed in order
to grab your attention, as if
they importance is of some
urgency. For example, the
Ghostbusters sign is placed
over the main image on
the page, despite the fact
that it pays no relevance to
it, however it does
highlight that its a feature
worth noting.
The most notable feature on
this cover is that the focus
movie takes up a large
majority of the space on the
page. It overlaps the
masthead as well as having a
title which is sized much larger
than all over text on the page.
3. Certain aspects on this cover are very
traditional and expected. I.e. The
masthead, the barcode and the main title
movie. These features are key to the
magazine and are not only reoccurring on
film magazines but all magazines in
general.
Rather than the page appearing to have
seemingly incorporated the main title
movie, it seems more as though the cover
revolves around it. For instance, its not as
if it just a picture of the movie, but the
whole page looks as though its a screen
shot from a scene, emphasized by the
smoke in the bottom left hand corner and
blurred settings that seems to match it.
Smaller information that may interest
readers has been placed at the bottom of
the cover just in case people have an
interest in reading more into those films
rather than the main ones advertised.
4. Conventions surrounding the title movie
match the genre and focus of the film. For
instance, the blood splatter on the back
wall, the red scratchy pattern covering the
title and the grimy looking wall in the
background all highlight the gritty and violent
nature of the movie.
The characters on the cover all suit the genre
and point of the movie. There all dressed in
clothing that suggests the movie is of a
historic nature, clearly here dating back to
sometime in the 1800’s. Also, you can see
they all fairly match the connotations often
placed with people around in a time known as
the Wild West, therefore potentially play the
part of cowboy-like protagonists.
The cover also features 2 eye catching
punch lines which are likely to intrigue
readers. Firstly, above the title reads ‘The
Good, The Bad and The Bloody’. An obvious
reference to the famous western ‘The
Good the Bad and The Ugly’, a movie well
known to have influenced Tarantino in
making this movie. Also, by the
replacement on Ugly with Bloody, the
audience get an insight into the direction
that the movie may go in. Then below the
title states ‘How Tarantino reinvented the
West’, which basically states that this
movie is unlike all others amongst its genre
and therefore may catch the attention of
those interested in the genre to begin with.
5. Important, but distinct and unusual information is
then placed on the page (Oscar special at the top) in
big font in order to attract readers. This is due to the
fact that you are not likely to see this type of
information on every issue of the magazine, and
therefore it is worth noting down as its quite a rare
occurrence but important to the film industry as a
whole, which is what this magazine is devoted to
documenting
Again, similar to the last, other films are also
mentioned of the cover in order to persuade
readers who may not be all interested in the
cover movie to buy the magazine anyway
because there is also a information in there
about other big movies which are also likely to
attract mass appeal.
You also need to make reference to the date
in which this magazine was released, the
price and potential other sources of
information such as there online website.
This is done just above the ‘M’ on the
masthead and shows that the position of this
text is interchangeable per magazine as on
the last in cover I analysed its in a different
position and really has no specific placing
but still is important enough to include on
every issue.
6. However, the magazine has chosen to go about a
different approach when documenting this particular
movie. ‘Sky fall’ the 2012 007 smash –hit received
major publication and promotion not only in the UK
but throughout the world. It was the most eagerly
anticipated Bond movie yet and because of this
Empire have devoted a whole front page in the
promotion of this movie. This is a unique occurrence
and shows that this movie is of major importance.
This could be done when creating a page revolving
around our movie but you would have to decide why
the movie has obtained such a special privilege.
Firstly, the colouring of this page as a whole is
different to others issues as its more of a basic
and simple approach rather than just jamming the
page full of varying colours. However, this is
capable of being done because there is much less
information to present this time in comparison to
others copies. However, I would argue the
colouring of this page is far more sticking than
normal and the contrast of the white
background, black suit and gold masthead add a
sense of class and sophistication to the
page, elements of associated with Bond movies
themselves. This is another example of how the
page is meant to revolve around the
movie, rather than just the movie being placed on
the page.
7. However, again an example of how keys features such as the
masthead, date, price and name of the title movie all manage
to make their way onto the page despite it being unique and
outlandish in comparison to other editions of the magazine.
This just further indicates the importance of this text on the
page.
Daniel Craig (James Bond) is presented in a black and
white colour, despite the fact that the movie is shot in
full colour. This highlights the movies prestige as well as
relating the page to the famous Gun Barrel sequence
seen in many of 007’s movie. This shows again how you
should incorporate aspects of the movie itself in the
page to give readers the right idea of the direction in
which it will e heading.
Finally, little text is given in order to sell the movie,
in fact only the Title of the movie is and in this case
its presented in a much smaller text in comparison
to other issues. This highlights how important the
movie is, and how it is felt that the movie requires
minimal attempts at having to sell itself due to its
already highly publicised presentation. However,
the small text which states Skyfall is displayed in the
same way it is on the movie postern as well as
contrasting the background colour, all of which give
off its importance and established nature.
