3. The importance of cross media convergence and
synergy in production, distribution, and marketing
DC Entertainment, a company of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, which itself is owned by Time
Warner. This means they have the right to use
Lego characters such as batman in the film
The film is based on the Lego line of
construction toys
4. The technologies that have been introduced in recent
years at the levels of
production, distribution, marketing, and exchange
In July 2012, a Lego-user contest announced on the movie's Facebook page would choose a
winning Lego vehicle to appear in the film.
Tech production – CGI, able to have a global team working on the film, easy to transfer files
between countries, computers etc.
Tech distribution – able to be shown digitally with ease, no need for conversion.
Tech marketing – online, apps, trailers, physical posters etc. Fan based films on youtube?
Tech exchange – this will be blu ray, dvd, think about piracy or torrents for sharing.
5. The significance of proliferation in hardware and
content in institutions and audiences
6. The importance of technological convergence for
institutions and audiences
17 Lego building sets based on the film's scenes and characters will be released, including Lord
Business' Evil Lair, and Cloud Cuckoo Palace, along with a new set of 16 Minifigures (William
Shakespeare, Gail the Construction Worker, Panda Guy, Abraham Lincoln, Taco Tuesday Guy,
Larry the Barista, President Business, Calamity Drone, Marsha Queen of the Mermaids, Wild
West Wyldstyle, Scribble-Face Bad Cop, Velma Staplebot, Hard Hat Emmet, "Where are my
Pants?" Guy, Mrs. Scratchen-Post, and Wiley Fusebot).
7. The issues raised in the targeting of national
and local audiences by international and global
institutions

8. The ways in which your own experiences of media
consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends of
audience behaviour
10. Audience
Lego, the Danish company, for years refused to
entertain Hollywood’s overtures.
“We are not an entertainment company. And
we were very much in doubt about what a
Lego movie would look like so we said no many
times,” said Lego chief marketing officer Mads
Nipper at the afterparty, referring to the many
pitches he heard.
Still, he and the other execs were eventually
won over by producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee
who talked of a movie paying tribute to
creativity and imagination.
The script also took years to craft. Lord and
Miller worked off a foundation by Dan and
Kevin Hageman and began writing four years
ago. They said they were still writing even
weeks ago when trying to mix the movie.
(We’re a little obsessive,” said Miller.)
11. Pre-Production
The film has been in development at Warner Bros. since 2008. By August 2009, Dan and Kevin Hageman were writing the script for a comedy
action-adventure live-action/animated film. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were in talks in June 2010 to
write and direct the film. Warner Bros. green-lit the film by November 2011, with a planned 2014 release date. The Australian studio Animal
Logic was contracted to provide the animation, which was expected to comprise 80% of the film. By this time Chris McKay, the director of Robot
Chicken, had also joined Lord and Miller to co-direct. In March 2012, Lord and Miller revealed the film's working title, Lego: The Piece of
Resistance, and a storyline. In April 2012, Warner Bros. scheduled the film for release on February 28, 2014, a date that subsequently changed.
By June 2012, Chris Pratt had been cast as the voice of Emmet, the lead Lego character, and Will Arnett voicing Lego Batman; the role of Lego
Superman was offered to Channing Tatum. By August 2012, Elizabeth Banks was hired to voice Lucy (later renamed Wyldstyle) and Morgan
Freeman to voice Vitruvius, an old mystic. In October 2012, Warner Bros. shifted the release date for the film, simply titled Lego, to February 7,
2014. In November 2012, Alison Brie, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, and Nick Offerman signed on for roles. Brie voices a member of Emmet's team
with a powerful secret, Ferrell voices a villain named President Business, Neeson voices a foe called Bad Cop, and Offerman voices Metalbeard, a
pirate seeking revenge on the President.
Production
Warner Bros. has been looking to expand its own development of animated films for a while now, and Stern has actually been a big part of that process. Last
year it was announced that the studio was bringing in a brain trust of writers and directors to help develop new projects, and names involved in that story
included Stern, Lord & Miller, Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets/Forgetting Sarah Marshall), and the team of John Requa & Glenn Ficarra (Bad Santa). In addition
to a LEGO Movie sequel, WB is also working on an animated film called Storks and another called Smallfoot.
The Wrap is reporting that Warner Bros. will announce a sequel to The Lego Movie. It will be written by Jared Stern (The Internship, Mr. Popper’s Penguins)
and Michelle Morgan (Girl Most Likely).
It should come as no surprise to see Warner Bros. greenlight The Lego Movie 2 (or whatever they end up calling it) this early. It’s commonplace that animated
films get sequels, and they often get them planned before the wide public even sees them. There’s a formula that works well for studios. What do kids love
even more than animated characters? Animated characters that they already know they love.
If that weren’t enough already, all signs are pointing to The Lego Movie being a major hit this weekend. It’s faced up against the George Clooney directed The
Monuments Men, which has a huge A-list cast, as well as Vampire Academy, which is based on the popular book series. These three would seemingly make a
crowded and competitive weekend, but all signs point to The Lego Movie running away with the box office (and finally putting a stop to Ride Along‘s run in the
top spot). Advanced research suggests The Lego Movie will make at least $40 million.
13. Marketing
Various Lego characters, either original or from licensed properties, make cameos or play bit parts. These include, among others: Johnny
Thunder (from the Adventurers line), Lloyd Garmadon the Green Ninja (Ninjago), C-3PO, Han Solo and Lando Calrissian (Star Wars) the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dumbledore (Harry Potter), Gandalf (Lord of the Rings), Shaquille O'Neal and the NBA All-Stars (Sports), Lion Knights
(Castle), and many characters from the Minifigures series.

15. Exhibition
The Lego Movie will premiere at LEGOLAND California on February 6, 2014,[29] and is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 7, 2014.
The 3D animation, set in a world made up of
plastic children's blocks, took $69.1 million
(£42m) between Friday and Sunday, according
to studio estimates.
16. Digital
Sound mix: Dolby Digital, Datasat, SDDS
Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1
Camera: Arri Alexa
The animation is a combination of stop-motion
and CGI. The creators deliberately tried to
make the movie feel like stop-motion, and
avoided making the computer-generated
effects look too obvious. This was done to
make the movie look like real Legos
