To conclude my work on Question 3, I have created a presentation that summarises what I learnt from audience research, the strengths and weaknesses of my product, how well I appealed to my target audience, the changes I could make, and how feedback would help if I released my products.
2.
I have created a product that clearly belongs to its intended group. My survey and
Focus Group told me that the trailer clearly belonged to the thriller genre
90% of people who answered my survey, and the people in the focus group,
wanted to see the film upon seeing the trailer, suggesting that it had fulfilled its
purpose, which is to advertise a film
The shot variety in my trailer works very well and was well considered, and
people said the soundtrack and shot variety were the most conventional parts of
the trailer
People want the trailer to be well made. I was told that the image quality was a
bit fuzzy, so I clearly need to be more careful when shooting and uploading the
trailer
Sometimes, certain occurrences confused people, such as the trainers and one of
the characters suddenly wearing a coat
Some of the scenes were quite memorable, such as Jacob (antagonist) shooting
through the trees
3.
Both products were praised for their variation of colour, which vindicates my decision to go
for two rather dull colours (grey and black) and a vibrant colour (red), which increases the
visibility of text. Also, it is a challenge to get the same technique to work on two vastly
different products, so for both to get such good feedback, shows I succeeded in my work in
this area
My inclusion, size and placement of text on the poster was commended because of how it
made the poster look conventional and typical of film posters. It suggests that members of
my target audience pick up on even the smallest details, so I need exquisite attention to
detail
On the poster, image placement was praised because it revealed the setting of the film,
giving more insight into the film
The red eye effect was also commended, because of how it reflected the thriller genre, with
the antagonist being somehow twisted and menacing
My magazine had a very professional layout, that easy on the eye. People want a product
that does not seem noisy and cluttered, otherwise it wont be aesthetically pleasing
The image on the magazine was praised because of how it showed the antagonist in
character so clearly
4. STRENGTHS
Clearly belongs to the thriller
genre and appeals to target
audience
Makes people want to watch
the whole film
There is excellent shot
variety, soundtrack, choice of
location and mise-en-scene
There were clear use of
conventions, and the use was
effective
Some of the scenes were
quite memorable
WEAKNESSES
Some of the scene lengths
were too long, making the
trailer too slow paced
Some of the lighting needs to
be more low-key than it is
There is still some work to do
to utilise more conventions
The image quality could be
improved, as it was a bit fuzzy
Some scenes confused
people, so work has to be
done to ease this
5. STRENGTHS
The layout was very
professional and well
structured
The layout was also
aesthetically pleasing
The choice of colour was
professional and visually
pleasing
The image was good
because of how it captured
the person in character
WEAKNESSES
There was the possibility of
going further with the
image and going for a
more zoomed in image
The inclusion of a twitter
address on the front cover
was not necessary
6. STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES
The red-eye effect was
successful in capturing the
personality traits of an
antagonist
The colour variation was
excellent and created a
visually pleasing look
The image placement was
clever because of how it
revealed the setting
The size and placement of
small detailed logos showed
my attention to detail
The red eye effect could
have been more vibrant
that it was
There could have been the
possibility to add another
image in the backdrop to
show the power of the
antagonist
7. The poster and magazine received overwhelmingly positive reviews, especially for
small details such as the size and placement of components of the products. The
suggestions for improvement could be classed as very picky details, that would
satisfy personal preference. My print based products were aesthetically pleasing and
professional in appearance, so I think I appealed to my target audience very
effectively here, because the comments show that they want a product that shows
care and attention. This feeds back to them as consumers, because it makes them
feel valued as customers. I wasn’t expecting the praise I got for my images, and I
think I strongly appealed to the target audience because I carefully considered the
costume and placement of the image. My approach to print based products has
developed into one of extreme attention to detail, which explains why I zoom in to
the point where the magazine is pixelated just to ensure that everything is lined up
correctly. I think the audience feedback shows that they respect that.

8. My trailer generally received what I would describe as ‘the right side of mixed’
feedback. There were such comments as the trailer clearly belonging to the thriller
genre and making clear and effective use of conventions. In addition, 9 out of 10
people who answered my survey on my trailer were in my target audience, so the
results of this survey were reliable in determining how well I appealed to my target
audience. I generally feel that I appealed very well to my target audience, but not as
well as my print based products did. Unquestionably, I made good use of
conventions and paid careful attention to elements of thriller, which the audience
respected. But some elements of the trailer were confusing, some of the lighting
wasn’t low-key, and there was room for more conventions. The audience wants a
perfect and well made trailer, and those elements are quite basic flaws, arguably, so
that would damage how well I appealed to my target audience.
9.
I would cut the length of the trailer down by some distance, and make the scenes
quicker, to create a faster paced trailer that is more of a flyover of the film
I would work harder at implementing key features such as low key lighting. This
would make my trailer perhaps more conventional and more fitting of trailers in
general, and I could then establish a better relationship with my target audience
I would upload the trailer in HD, to reduce the fuzz of images. Investigations
concluded this to be the cause of the problem
I need to make certain events clearer if the trailer is going to be released
Sometimes, sticking with the norm is better than being innovative, so I wouldn’t
include a twitter address below the masthead
10. When anyone makes things, they are in most cases extremely proud of what
they do and are often blind to the truth. Gathering feedback from the target
audience gives a vital second opinion that in some cases is far more
informed and better judged than the creator’s opinion. If I were to release
my products, audience feedback would allow for important fine tuning that
would have to be made before they saw the public eye. Nobody wants a
product to be talked about for the wrong reasons. Audience Feedback
throws up, in some cases, unexpected outcomes, so the audience feedback
can help because it can stop basic flaws from being seen once a product is
released. In effect, audience feedback is the green light to public release.
