2. Definition of Ethnicity
Ethnicity is the fact or state of belonging to a social
group that has a common national or cultural
tradition.
3. Ethnicity in TV drama
A lot of work on Race has focused on the representation of
black men and women. This has partly been because there is
a strong African-American counter-culture which provides
viable alternative role models and demands that they are
represented, and partly because some of the early racial
stereotypes were so obvious and offensive.
A majority of crime or bad behaviour in the UK is
thought/shown to be committed from people of black
ethnicity. This creates the stereotype that black people are
perceived as always being the bad person in media or in
general life.
4. Stereotypes
The sun had a recent report on ‘Britain's most wanted
criminals’ and if you look at the profiles it’s interesting to
note how many of the criminals in the list are white British.
This reinforces that people of other ethnic minority's are
perceived to be less superior to the white race, and are
shown the be the bad people of society. The common view of
the Sun’s readership is that they are largely of the white
ethnic groups, as they are shown as more upper class. This
also makes the readers of the sun news paper believe the
stereotype that ethnic minorities can be viewed as
dangerous to people and society.
5. Problems in society
The police force is also shown/believed to be more biased to
white people as the majority of people arrested for crimes
or shown on the news to the UK, are usually of black or
other ethnic minorities to show that they are more lower
class the white people, and that they are the main cause of
all, gang crimes and the negative representation of the UK.
The reason they do this, is to show that the problems in the
UK are from people that are either illegal immigrants or not
of white ethnicity.
