At Ustream the teams developing the streaming technology stack are also responsible for operating it. This means we have our monitoring and alerting in place (including those based on error logs I mentioned above, but many others too) which alert the engineers themselves. I would like to talk about how we made this transition from the traditional setup where the devs did the coding and the sysops did the operation - what lessons we learned, how we convinced the sysop guys to give us permissions and so on

Fifteen years ago, we'd barely started to use S3, and ten years ago DevOps was the new thing. Today, we can add a new tool, technology, or trick every week, and more and more work is shifted into the application developer's workflow. If security, resiliency, and incident response become part of product teams, where will we be ten years from now, and what should we do today to get ready?

(Talk given at Continuous Lifecycle London 2016) Continuous Delivery techniques and practices are often misunderstood. This session will explore some Continuous Delivery anti-patterns based on work 'in the wild' with a wide range of organisations across different industry sectors: - Believing that "Continuous Delivery is not for us" - Ignoring the database - Thinking that a deployment pipeline is just a series of chained jobs in Jenkins - Not funding the build/test/deployment capability properly - No effective logging or application metrics By avoiding these pitfalls, we can increase the effectiveness of our software delivery efforts.

Session presented at CodeMash 2016. DevOps is a hot topic, but it’s a bit ambiguous. What do developers really need to know about DevOps? What is it? What ISN’T it? What difference does it make? We’ll start by examining “DevOps”, what it means to embrace it, and the various personnel involved. We consider the potential benefits associated with a DevOps approach and the risks associated with adopting it…and with not adopting it. We take a quick look at some of the tools and platforms that can be used to implement a productive DevOps environment, including (but not limited to): * Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) software * Infrastructure Build Automation tools * Virtualization, Containerization, and Cloud options Finally, we run a live scenario using several of the tools discussed to demonstrate the key components of a DevOps-committed lifestyle. We start from nothing, using available tooling to build the target platform in a scriptable, repeatable fashion…then demonstrate effective use of CI/CD software for a more streamlined and effective software build/test/deploy cycle…and finally show how containers and cloud services form the foundation upon which everything else is built.

With an ever-increasing array of tools and technologies claiming to 'enable DevOps', how do we know which tools to try or to choose? In-house, open source, or commercial? Ruby or shell? Dedicated or plugins? It transpires that highly collaborative practices such as DevOps and Continuous Delivery require new ways of assessing tools and technologies in order to avoid creating new silos. Matthew Skelton shares his recent experience of helping many different organisations to evaluate and select tools to facilitate DevOps; the recommendations may surprise you. DevOps is an increasingly useful tool for achieving business objectives, enabling your teams to work together to improve the efficiency and quality of software delivery. However, despite its growing popularity, there is still a lack of clarity over what DevOps actually means, how organizations should do it and what's the best way to get started. DevOps 101 takes a brief look at the history of DevOps, why it started, what problems it is intended to solve and how you can start implementing it. The slides were delivered by James Betteley, Head of Education at the DevOpsGuys in a one-hour webinar. The full recording is available here - https://youtu.be/4gC3WpbetKs?t=2s James has spent the last few years neck-deep in the world of DevOps transformation, helping a wide range of organizations optimize the way they collaborate to deliver better software, faster. James was joined by Elizabeth Ayer, Portfolio Manager, from Redgate Software. Elizabeth looks after a range of Redgate products that help teams extend their DevOps practices to SQL Server databases. Building a modern monitoring environment is more than just using the latest awesome tools, collecting all the data, displaying numerous graphs, and knowing when things go wrong. A modern monitoring environment is more than tools and infrastructure. It’s a service. A service you provide to your whole team: developers, operations, security, and the business. This talk is about how you can build monitoring environments (or extend your existing environment) that are customer-focused rather than infrastructure focused. You’ll see how you can treat your needs and the needs of your organization as customer requirements, and build monitoring that is consumable and configurable on demand. We’ll focus on: * You are not the only customer of your monitoring * What does monitoring as a service look like? * How do we move to a customer-driven service? * How does this change how your monitoring environment operates? By the end of the talk you should be able to understand what you need in order to make monitoring available as a service to anyone in your organization.

First came agile, then came DevOps and Continuous Delivery, now comes Continuous Testing. In this new reality of rapid releases, incremental changes, and short QA cycles, testing is becoming a bottleneck. Continuous Testing is a major opportunity for QA leaders to redefine the strategic role in the organization, specifically as drivers of quality within Continuous Delivery. Join us for an overview of the upcoming challenges that you will face as QA leaders and how Continuous Testing will bring you through these changes on top. Where Testers and QA Fit in the Story of DevOps Continuous delivery. CI. GitHub. Scrum. CD. Jenkins. Continuous testing. Continuous integration. These are just some terms that are supposed to describe the word soup that is DevOps. Chances are that you have heard some or all of these words being passed around at your daily stand ups or company meetings. However, where does QA and testing fit into the story of DevOps? Some would say that developers and operations teams are all you need for a successful DevOps pipeline, while others show that Dev, Test and Ops need to be included to ensure quality at every step in your pipeline. In this webinar, Ryan Yackel, QASymphony's Director of Product Marketing, and Sunil Sehgal, Managing Partner at TechArcis, will share their experiences as they navigate you through the DevTestOps waters. In this webinar you will learn: Overview of the State of DevOps Common misconceptions of DevOps and QA How testers must adapt to the DevOps process The tools testers need for continuous testing Can't make the webinar? There are numerous examples of DevOps and Continuous Delivery reference architectures available, and each of them vary in levels of detail, tools highlighted, and processes followed. Yet, there is a constant theme among the tool sets: Jenkins, Maven, Sonatype Nexus, Subversion, Git, Docker, Puppet/Chef, Rundeck, ServiceNow, and Sonar seem to show up time and again.

Corporations are struggling with overly complex systems and system landscapes. DevOps is presented as one piece of the puzzle to go for much leaner and simpler landscapes - all in order to increase the readiness for change and innovation. The presentation also discusses the the basic thought error behind organising according to Design-Build-Run, which is the basis for most ICT IM outsourcing.

Docker hit the developer scene in a big way last year. It made it easy for developers to run their applications locally and easily share and deploy them. But it wasn't quite ready for prime-time. It wasn't easy to run n-tier applications locally, manage Docker across different geographical locations or cluster Docker for availability and performance. Recent releases of Docker have introduced new capabilities and tools to help with these use cases. In this session we're going to look at these new capabilities including: * Looking at Docker Compose for building n-tier Docker applications and managing application stacks. * Introduce Docker Swarm which provides orchestration and clustering for Docker servers. * See how to integrate Docker and service discovery tools. By the end of the session, you'll have a good understanding of how to take your Docker implementation to the next level and make use of these new capabilities.

A talk about lessons learned from building developer and sysadmin-facing tools at Puppet and Docker. It’s applicable to open source tools for broader use and the tools you and your teams develop inside your organization. Building tools, both external and internal, is hard. Getting people to adopt those tools is even harder. These are ideas to make it easier.

We're slowly starting to see Configuration Management become a default rather than an exception. Increasingly large numbers of organizations see CM as a requirement and not an extra. Sadly we don't see this maturity reflected in the monitoring world. Change has been slow, we're often not monitoring the right things or the right places and environments remain heavily manual. So why hasn't monitoring advanced at the same pace as CM? What's different about it? More importantly, what can we do about it?

Most open source projects are rightly proud of their communities, long histories (both measured in time and version control), passionate debates and occasional trolling. Newcomers to these communities often face an uphill battle, though. Not just in understanding decision making processes and community standards, but in coming to terms with often complex, contradictory, and poorly documented code bases. This talk will introduce you to the concepts and tools you need to be an expert code, culture, and community archaeologist and quickly become productive and knowledgeable in an unknown or legacy code base.

Operations people frequently communicate and learn through stories and mythology. Much like fairy tales: some of this mythology is healthy, some cautionary and some moralistic. Your Operations mythology is a strong element in how your organisational culture is shaped and more importantly can influence how your Operations team makes decisions. I (with some help from Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm) am going to examine why these stories and mythology matter. We’ll look at how these shape your culture and set the mood for your Operations team. You’ll see why and how mythology, whether you’re in a giant enterprise or a tiny startup, often subconsciously influences the decisions and choices you make and the risks you’re prepared to take. Finally, I’ll present some ways you can tell good stories, build healthy mythology, make use of that mythology for profit, and how you can eradicate the mythology and stories that give your Operation’s team nightmares.

Roll back doesn’t exist. It’s not real. It’s a fantasy, a dream, a delusion. Any vendor who tells you they have a roll back capability is lying to you. And lying to you in a downright dangerous way that will come back to haunt you at 4am in a war room when someone says: “We can’t fix this. Let’s roll back the deployment.” This talk is designed to explain and demonstrate to Operations staff: Why roll back is a fantasy and explained with a dash of Werner Heisenberg Why it is dangerous and how you can recognize when you’re about to get trapped How you can avoid falling into that trap of considering it an appropriate compensating control. It’ll also explain what you can actually do operationally instead of “rolling back”. This will cover other alternative compensating controls that can help you get running again and resolve your outage whilst still allowing you to find root cause.

Configuration management is the oft-misunderstood (and possibly black) art of managing your IT environment, infrastructure, and costs. Done well it can reduce operational errors and outages, simplify your environment, and help maintain the sanity of your IT staff. Puppet is part of the bright future of configuration management for heterogeneous Unix systems. It combines automation, a powerful abstraction language, and uses a client-server model that can scale to suit enterprise-size environments. Puppet is written in Ruby and authored by recovering system administrator-turned-developer Luke Kanies. This session explains why configuration management is important, the benefits configuration management will deliver, and how all of this can be achieved using Puppet. The session also explains emerging best practices in configuration management and addresses: * What is configuration management? Or why am I here? * Benefits, risks, and challenges: build fire resistant infrastructure rather than fight fires * Best practice: how do we do this configuration management magic right? * Where does Puppet fit in and why should management pay for its implementation? * Why using Puppet will save you money and help staff retention (although is unlikely to stop world hunger) * Real world configuration management using Puppet: code, examples, explanations, and using Puppet in anger * Measuring the results and pocketing the returns * Where to from here: some ideas about the future (may include wild-arse guesses)

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
