You may want to read the last two paragraphs – the language will be unfamilar and both ESL and students not reading at grade level might be frustrated. Take the time to have a class discussion about electricity in homes here in Aurora (you can use as much as you can pay for) versus homes that are “off the grid” and dependent on a fixed amount of energy. Many students are not aware that homes even 115 years ago did not have electricity and that there are many, many places in the world that do not have electrical infrastructure.
The videos are compelling – and give students a glimpse of what their chapter challenge is all about. Find the time to show them even if it isn’t on this first introduction day. NOTE: the 9 minute video on Habitat for Humanity begins with a Bible verse, and mentions Christianity once or twice – it’s definitely not a focus of the video (and you could always start the video just beyond the Bible verse, but you may want to watch the video before you show it.
