2. Writing For A Purpose
0 Our site has been faced with some important challenges. In
our very own neighborhood, students are faced with the
temptation to begin to use ecigarettes.
0 What are they? Why are they dangerous?
0 Without better regulation, what could happen to our young
people?
0 Our leadership class has taken on the challenge, and will be
informing our students and our local government leaders
the facts about the danger of ecigarette use and teens.
0 Ready, Set, Inform, Persuade!

3. What is a PSA?
PSA is short for Public Service Announcement.
A public service announcement or public service ad, is a
messages in the public interest, disseminated by the
media without charge, with the objective of raising
awareness, and or changing public attitudes and
behavior toward a social issue.
What are key words in this definition that will help us
set our direction?

4. Doing the Research
0 Log into Edmodo and find your assignment link.
Assign each group member two or three articles to
review so your group will have plenty of facts to use
for your presentation.
0 I have a list of 8 -10 articles that need to be reviewed
by your group. If you find other relevant information,
please post it to our class Edmodo wall for all to use.
0 Please use the 3,2, 1, protocol to review the material.

5. 3, 2, 1 Protocol
0 First read the article.
0 Then, note at least the following in your journal as you
read:
0 3 things you learned
0 2 interesting things that might be good for your PSA
0 1 image or question that is helpful

6. What Is Your Purpose?
0 What is your message? At the end of your PSA what do
you want to accomplish?
0 Some options:
0 Inform about dangers of e cigarettes
0 Inform public how easily accessible these products
have become to teens
0 Persuade the FDA and policy makers to toughen laws
about ecigarettes in general, and their placement in
the stores in particular

7. Step One: Get Focused!
0 Individually: Journal the following:
0 What is your main idea? Out of everything you have
read, make a list of 5-7 things that could be part of
your message
0 Meet together in your group/partners and share your
ideas. Use charts and lists to collaborate together to
form one or two statements that summarize your
goal.
0 As your production group: Set your tag line or hook, in
one sentence or statement, what do you want the
view to walk away with?

8. Basic Guideline for Your PSA
Script
0 Length of PSA :
0 30 seconds, about 60 to 75 words
0 60 seconds about 125-150 words
0 After you have completed the graphic organizer, it is
time to write your script
0 Write 2 drafts, one longer than the other and
rehearse, rehearse, rehearse!
0 Select one that you feel captures your message.

9. Check Your Facts!
0 Remember you are required to back up your
persuasive statements with facts.
0 Assign each person on your team on article to look at
again to make sure you cite your facts and sources
correctly.
0 In your script make sure you cite your sources so the
viewers feel that you have done your homework and
they can trust what you say.

10. Brainstorm the Format
0 Get with your team and brainstorm ideas and ways to
illustrate the main points you have selected.
0 Use your graphic organizer to plan out the message,
music and illustrations for your movie.
0 Make sure you select images that enhance your
message and cite where you found that image.

11. Creating an iMovie
0 Using your iMovie guide as a plan, together create an iMovie. You
can use images and text, images and voice, or film a movie, this is
totally up to you.
0 Make sure you monitor your sound carefully. It is critical that you
speak clearly and volume of both voice and/or music is
appropriate.
0 Don’t forget to include credits at the end of your movie that
recognized the photos, music and facts you used for this
production
0 Once your draft is completed, please save it using Quicktime, and
post it to our Edmodo page.

12. Next Steps
0 Once all of our PSA’s have been submitted, we will
hold a PSA movie showing. Each team will complete
an evaluation of each team movie, and a self
evaluation with their own work.
0 We will select two PSA’s to share at the El Cajon City
Council meeting on May 27th and combine our facts
and images into a Prezi presentation.
