1. Teacher Mandates
Read through the seven mandates. Add your thoughts to the slide of
this Voicethread and consider the thoughts of your colleagues.
2. Teachers responsibilities that are
mandated by law are:
• Discuss with students the
district's harassment,
intimidation, bullying policy,
stressing that bullying of any
kind will not be tolerated and
will be immediately reported;
3. Teachers responsibilities that are
mandated by law are:
• Report any incidents of
harassment, intimidation or
bullying that come to your
attention in the required time
frame;
4. Teachers responsibilities that are
mandated by law are:
• Teach bullying-prevention in
your class, something that
your school selects or
something of your own
choosing those that foster anti-bullying
behaviors (respect,
acceptance, compassion,
personal responsibility)
5. Teachers responsibilities that are
mandated by law are:
• Complete at least two hours of
instruction on harassment,
intimidation, and bullying
prevention, and two hours of
suicide prevention, in each
professional development
period;
6. Teachers responsibilities that are
mandated by law are:
• Listen to students who say
they're being bullied, or see
someone being bullied. Many
students don't report bullying
because they believe they
won't be supported. Yet, when
students know they'll be
backed up by school staff, they
feel safer reporting;
7. Teachers responsibilities that are
mandated by law are:
• Take seriously and report
incidences of bullying that
take place off school ground
but affect the well-being,
safety, or performance of
students when they are in
school. Cyberbullying is a
prime example of bullying that
may be initiated off school
grounds yet affects students in
school.
8. • The third mandate is to teach bullying-prevention in your
class, something that your school selects or something of
your own choosing those that foster anti-bullying
behaviors (respect, acceptance, compassion, personal
responsibility).
