Every DBA should know how to back up and recover a database - their job may depend on it one day. In order to make backup and recovery easier, Oracle gives DBAs RMAN. In Oracle 12c, RMAN includes many new features to make backup and recovery simpler and more robust. This session will cover 5 of the top new features introduced in RMAN for Oracle 12c, coming from more than four years of experience with the product. Discussion of each new feature will explain how it can be used by normal DBAs in their everyday work life - not just abstract discussions on features that will never actually be used in the real world.

Speakers: Liang Xie and Honghua Feng (Xiamoi) This talk covers the HBase environment at Xiaomi, including thoughts and practices around latency, hardware/OS/VM configuration, GC tuning, the use of a new write thread model and reverse scan, and block index optimization. It will also include some discussion of planned JIRAs based on these approaches.

In this session we want to explore the various ways you can setup a connection strategy. We'll start with Oracle's UCP (Universal Connection Pool), its architecture and most notably, how do you size it? We'll discuss important concepts such as: connection reservation, and the distinction between connection, process and session. Besides UCP there are: Database Resident Connection Pool (DRCP) and Proxy Resident Connection Pool (PRCP). Which will both be discussed. We'll also look into combining different types of pools: what are their typical use-cases, and what are the pitfalls?

Learning how to detect, diagnose and resolve performance problems in SQL Server is tough. Often, years are spent learning how to use the tools and techniques that help you detect when a problem is occurring, diagnose the root-cause of the problem, and then resolve the problem. In this session, attendees will see demonstrations of the tools and techniques which make difficult troubleshooting scenarios much faster and easier, including: • XEvents, Profiler/Traces, and PerfMon • Using Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) • Advanced Diagnostics Using Wait Stats • Reading SQL Server execution plan Every DBA needs to know how to keep their SQL Server in tip-top condition, and you’ll need skills the covered in this session to do it.

Concurrent processing is a critical functionality in any e-Business Suite system. DBAs will recognize problems like jammed concurrent manager queues, failover problems, load balancing issues causing one node to be more loaded that another, performance overhead or even an unwanted bounce of the managers when incompatibility rules change. It is important to understand the configuration of a reliable concurrent processing environment, therefore, topics like PCP, node affinity, load balancing, optimal cache size and sleep time settings, separation of manager duties, request groups and others will be discussed.

This is yet another session of the SQL Server performance troubleshooting category. But this time it is not focused on various techniques and methodologies, what is the case in many others presentations. On the contrary. This presentation is focused on tools which are available for a very long time. The tools which are every day used by Microsoft engineers. The tools which still are known by very small amount of people.

Apache Flume’s extensible architecture allows Cisco to stream system and application logs from worldwide production data centers to a central Hadoop cluster and Solr. This architecture enables a new level of scalable indexing so that a larger volume of logs is searchable within seconds. Using Solr 4.0′s near real time features together with Hadoop, we can execute mission critical tasks much quicker, improving our ability to meet tight SLAs. At the same time, using the same infrastructure, we can perform large-scale historical analysis and pattern extraction to help further improve our services. This talk will explore our infrastructure and decisions we?ve made to meet key requirements, i.e. high indexing load, high availability and disaster recovery. We will further explore other uses of Flume and SolrCloud within Cisco including dynamic event routing, parsing and multi-tenancy.

SQL Server In-Memory OLTP can greatly improve the performance of transactional and other workloads. However, it is not suitable for all workloads, and it not a magic "go-fast" button. This session addresses when it is appropriate to use the technology and how to use it, from two different angles: a) listing characteristics that make a workload suitable and those that are not so suitable for In-Memory OLTP b) reviewing common application patterns and actual customer uses of In-Memory OLTP Link to the video presentation: https://youtu.be/h111hyt5Ndk

In this session I will use a simple HTTP benchmark to compare the performance of the Linux kernel networking stack with userspace networking powered by DPDK (kernel-bypass). It is said that kernel-bypass technologies avoid the kernel because it is "slow", but in reality, a lot of the performance advantages that they bring just come from enforcing certain constraints. As it turns out, many of these constraints can be enforced without bypassing the kernel. If the system is tuned just right, one can achieve performance that approaches kernel-bypass speeds, while still benefiting from the kernel's battle-tested compatibility, and rich ecosystem of tools.

This presentation covers the idea of logical hostname feature and its possible use case with E-Business Suite, why it is a must-have configuration for DR, how it can improve your test/dev instance cloning and lifecycle processes, especially in a cloud deployment, support overview by 11i/R12.0/R12.1, and why it is a very hot topic right now for R12.2. Additionally, we will describe possible advanced configuration scenarios like container based virtualization. The content is based on real client environment implementation experience.

The information in this paper is based on my experience ‘fixing’ the storage consumption process for a large customer ( 3 PB SAN environment) in a managed services (outsourced) environment. The names have been changed to protect the innocent but the processes, tools, and issues are very real. Regardless of whether you are the customer (end-consumer) of storage or the manager/provider of storage, the accuracy of storage consumption reports is essential to maintaining IT’s reputation and customer trust. In this paper we discuss the challenges of creating a sustainable, reliable, and robust charge back processes and tools for SAN storage consumption reporting.

ABSTRACT: Fatture in Cloud was born in late 2013 on a single-server machine and scaled from zero to 35k customers at the end of 2018. Then, we faced the mandatory electronic invoicing which came into effect in Italy on 1st January 2019, and we experienced a huge growth to 350k customers in few months. In these 5 years, I've learned a lot about cloud architecture, scalability, optimization, DevOps, and we eventually achieved a 99,99% uptime even in the huge growth period. BIO: Daniele Ratti is the Founder and CEO of Fatture in Cloud, which is currently the leader invoicing platform in Italy, counting more than 350k customers.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
