Fast food chains here in the Philippines are like mushrooms, popping out from different places. They are very popular nowadays because of their mouth-watering food and their fast service. It is part of every family’s bonding time during weekend. Our trip is not complete when we don’t pass by a fast food chain to eat our favorite food. In fact, children nowadays are very familiar with the food that most of the fast food chains are offering. Fast food is affordable and less time consuming but there are certain factors that causes a threat to the Philippine culture. Fast food chains may be beneficial to people but it can also be the reason to the weakening of our culture.
Culture implies that each society has its own way of life shared by most of its members. The Philippine culture is based on our history where we can clearly see that it is a combination of the cultures of our colonizers.
Factors about fastfood chains that affect our culture
McDonald’s started when Ray Kroc bought the franchise of a small burger joint owned by Dick and Mac McDonald, and opened his first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955.
In 1965 McDonald's went public with the company's first offering on the stock exchange. In 1967, the first McDonald's restaurant outside the United States opened in Richmond, British Columbia.
In 1958, two enterprising college students, Frank and Dan Carney, borrowed $600 from their mom, opened a small pizza restaurant, which they called Pizza Hut, in their hometown in Wichita, Kansas. By December of the same year, they opened their second restaurant. By 1968, just 10 years later, they had opened over 300 restaurants.
In the Philippines, Pizza Hut began in 1984. It is now the country's most popular pizza chain serving Metro Manila and surrounding provinces, as well as Visayas and Mindanao with its Dine-In Restaurants, Delivery Units and Express Counters.
Another fast food chain emerged in 1937, when Vernon Rudolph opened his own doughnut shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, called Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
Fastfood became an everyday meal for most of the Filipinos.
Fast food chains are much popular now compared to our native dishes. Philippines has a rich culture and one of these aspects is our food. In terms of food, we have so many dishes to be proud of. Each place in this country has its own original food.

Filipinos have this culture of eating together. Eating time is not complete without a single member of the family. Filipinos have to wait for the family member so that they will eat together. This practice is not important anymore compared to the old times because of the modern way of living. Today, fast food chains offer instant meals for the busy families, specifically those children whose parents are both working.
To some families, eating time provides the forum where members discuss activities and problems of the day. But working parents may not find time to eat dinner at home, particularly during the weekday. The children then eat by themselves, as household helpers reheat leftovers or buy food from fast food chains.
There are simple things that we can do.
I encourage you to at least try to eat in these Filipino restaurants because in these places, you can really feel that you are a Filipino through the food that they are offering. The food here is more cheaper compared to other restaurants.
Obesity and Cardiovascular HealthHigh Fructose Corn Syrup Fast food relies heavily on high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to sweeten its food.
This is a documentary film in 2004 wherein Morgan Spurlocks., the director, eats nothingbut McDonald's food for 30 days.(at breakfast, lunch, and dinner time).
After five days Spurlock has gained almost 10 pounds (4.5 kg).And later on, he experiences a feeling of depression and headaches.By the end of the month he weighs about 210 pounds (95.5 kg), which is originally 185.5 pounds. Overall, he gained 24.5 pounds. The doctor notes that he has eaten as many McDonald's meals as most nutritionists say the ordinary person should eat in 8 years (he ate 90 meals, which is close to 8 years of eating it once a month).
Because the amount of food that our body needs will be balanced and as I have said earlier, it will reduce the risk of getting health problems.

The money that you can save from reducing the intake of fastfood will be a great help for your other needs, especially those which are more important than eating in fastfood.

Fast food chains can benefit a lot of people in some way, but they should also consider the factors that will be affected by these fast food chains. We should restore our culture through simple things like eating our native dishes. Make time to plan for your weekly meals so that the food that you eat will be balanced. Also, this is the best time that you should learn how to cook for yourself. Learning how to cook is a good skill especially when your parents are always busy. Filipinos should appreciate the richness of their culture and learn how to spread it and be proud of it.
