Poster. The Rural Medicine Practical Period for Family Medicine Trainees in Spain
1. “ THE RURAL MEDICINE PRACTICAL PERIOD FOR FAMILY MEDICINE
TRAINEES IN SPAIN ”
Aims and Purpose:
Spain owns one of the oldest Family Medicine Training Programmes in Europe. This learning scheme is based on the “Family and Community
Training Programme” which is revised periodically. During its last update (2005) and for the first time, a compulsory Rural Medicine Practical
Period was included on it.
In this poster we describe and spread the various activities that Spanish trainees and the Rural Working Groups of Semfyc and Camfic ( Spanish
Family Medicine Associations) have been doing for the diffusion, assessment and improvement of this Rural Training Period. At the same time, we
try to enhance the international projection of this experience.
Methods:
All the information have been collected and summarized from the varied activities that the
authors have been producing for different meetings, workshops and scientific publications.
In addition multiple personal interviews have been done with several trainees involved and
interested in making known this Rural term.
Results:
Rural Working Groups from Semfyc and Camfyc ( Spanish Family Medicine
Associations) have been working as expert groups in collaboration with the National
Commission responsible for the Family Medicine Training Programme.
In addition, these Rural Working Groups have been acting as promoters and advisers in
many Training Centres. Finally, they have produced an specific programme for this
Training Period.

Trainees from multiple Teaching Centres in Spain have produced an observational
study assessing the implementation and satisfaction of the Rural Training Period in
Spain (2008).
As a conclusions, they enhance a good/very good satisfaction for practising in rural
areas (316/400) and some difficulties in attending this rural time (lake of official
responsible and extra expenses for the transport to the rural centres ).
