The use of infographics for classroom assignments is becoming commonplace in higher education, although less is known about its use in social work education. This workshop will review how three social work educators collaborated to develop, implement and evaluate an infographic assignment for courses across the social work curriculum. By the end of the session, participants will be able to recognize how infographic tools can be incorporated into assignments for social work courses, and understand how the use of social media as a teaching tool in undergraduate courses can be used to develop and assess social work competencies.

Abstract: The world has been facing a variety of natural disasters since the beginning of the world. Generally a disaster may be called as cyclone, tsunami, flood, storm etc. Similarly, dengue, malaria and other virus or bacterial infections that spread to the people also contribute to the elements of natural disasters. The role of media in times of these disasters is very important. In recent times the media especially social media, has seen a lot of technological advancements. The social media has become a very essential tool in reaching out the mass audience and is much easier than getting a message through the media. The website Talk walker points out that the number of social media users in India alone is 161 million. Through this field survey research, the researcher has shed some light on the popularity of social media for people living in cities like Chennai during disaster times. The researcher selected the participants from the following parts of Chennai: Besant Nagar, West Tambaram, Anna Nagar and Velachery A total of 350 Respondents participated in this survey. In this field survey, three types of questions have been asked by the researcher. These questions were asked to the respondents based on their experience and knowledge in the role of social media during the times of disaster. The study was conducted during the time period from 20November 2020 to 30 November 2020.

Role and Responsibility of Social Media during Disasters in Chennai

Despite the potential for media as a tool for engagement and democracy, the media industry today acts largely as a one-way flow of information and ideas. News, advertising and entertainment reflect only a handful of dominant narratives, and messages countering those narratives are easily shut down by corporations with the money and influence needed to shape the conversation. Major copyright and patent holders can – and do – intimidate those who challenge their products, and a lack of rights awareness combined with a tightly centralized media industry put innovation and freedom of speech in jeopardy. However, a handful of voices have permeated the mainstream, and demonstrated that it is possible for nuance and dissent to take root and effect broad change. Popular critics like Jon Stewart, W. Kamau Bell and others are using humor and remix to challenge the media industry even while working within it, and a surge in the ethos of self-creation has given rise to the Maker Movement, MOOCs, crowdfunding and more. As a new generation of media producers grows up in these new systems for empowerment, our concepts of what it means to access, control and create media and technology are at a critical moment of shift. In this session, The LAMP’s Emily Long will discuss this sea change in media-making and technology use through the lens of working with low-income communities to create “10,000 little Jon Stewarts,” and what’s next in a venture that confronts how we learn, create and interact with media messages.

Presentation for AEJMC "Engaging the Audience" panel in Montreal, Quebec, Aug. 7, 2014. // How are today’s journalists finding new ways to engage the audience they once took for granted? Jake Batsell has spent the past two years visiting innovative news organizations that are experimenting with new methods to connect with – and, yes, monetize – their readers, viewers and digital users. Batsell, an assistant professor of journalism at Southern Methodist University and a visiting research fellow at The Texas Tribune, conducted interviews with more than 100 journalists across the United States and United Kingdom for his forthcoming book, Engaged Journalism: Connecting With Digitally Empowered News Audiences (Columbia University Press, February 2015, ISBN # 978-0-231-16835-9). The goal is to demonstrate that, at a time when news organizations are losing agenda-setting power, journalists still can thrive by earning their audience's attention through a combination of online technology and personal interaction.

Sara Mae O’Brien Scott and Tatiana Baquero Cakici, Senior Consultants at Enterprise Knowledge (EK), presented “AI Fast Track to Search-Focused AI Solutions” at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC24) that took place on April 11, 2024 in Seattle, WA. In their presentation, O’Brien-Scott and Cakici focused on what Enterprise AI is, why it is important, and what it takes to empower organizations to get started on a search-based AI journey and stay on track. The presentation explored the complexities of enterprise search challenges and how IA principles can be leveraged to provide AI solutions through the use of a semantic layer. O’Brien-Scott and Cakici showcased a case study where a taxonomy, an ontology, and a knowledge graph were used to structure content at a healthcare workforce solutions organization, providing personalized content recommendations and increasing content findability. In this session, participants gained insights about the following: Most common types of AI categories and use cases; Recommended steps to design and implement taxonomies and ontologies, ensuring they evolve effectively and support the organization’s search objectives; Taxonomy and ontology design considerations and best practices; Real-world AI applications that illustrated the value of taxonomies, ontologies, and knowledge graphs; and Tools, roles, and skills to design and implement AI-powered search solutions.
