GIS is a tool that can integrate spatial and other types of data using base maps and layers associated with databases. It allows users to measure area and point data, and distances using vector data. Classroom applications of GIS are engaging for students as they can manipulate data, but teachers need time to learn the programs and access can sometimes be an issue. Free and simple online GIS programs like Google Earth do not require downloads and allow students to explore data beyond just maps of their local area. Effective integration of GIS into the classroom curriculum should be considered.
