Launched July 15, 2006 190 Million users (monthly visiters) What is Twitter? Twitter is a cross between a social network and a blog. The blog part is that users read and write 140 character 'tweets' which are largely public. The social network part is that people 'follow' each other then become part of each other's Twitter conversations, they can also 'retweet' or retransmit other people's messages to their own followers... It's like being at a party and talking to 10 different groups at the same time. The average (median) age for a Twitter user is 31, older than the median MySpace user who is 26, but younger than Facebook which is now 33. LinkedIn has the oldest users with the median being 39. Predictably the strongest growth in Twitter use is amongst those aged 18-24 ( Pew, 2009 ). Good read: http://www.spring.org.uk/2010/08/twitter-10-psychological-insights.php
Everyone now has a much larger audience - and their audience has an audience. So the reach of one person has multiplied many times. Before "social media", if I wasn't happy with a company, I might tell a dozen or so people. Now, when I complain, my complaint reaches hundreds or even thousands of people. That get's their attention and they take notice and action.
Why was Charter so willing to help me out? I can reach many more people today than I could have 10 years ago. AND THEY KNOW IT
How did they find my 'tweet"? The same way you can listen and join in the conversation. For Twitter, I use tools like TweetDeck, Twhirl, CoTweet and of course, the Twitter website. Each has it's own advantages and there are times when I use each. For Facebook, I keep up via the Facebook website, but also get notifications via email and my Instant Messaging Client - Pidgin. When someone writes on my Facebook wall or tags me in a photo, I get an email message and Pidgin lets me know as well. I can access all of these on my smart phone from anywhere.
Blogging is a great way to get your message out on a regular basis. When it comes to blogging, 346 million people worldwide and 77% of active Web users read blogs. The trend also grew by an astounding 68% in 2008 (Varcoe, 2009). 3 great FREE sites for blogging are blogger.com, tumblr.com and wordpress.com Try all 3 and see which one you prefer and suits your needs and abilities. All 3 are extremely easy to use. GDF blogs about once a week or so at: http://gilmerdairy.blogspot.com/

This is why I say to start small. So you don't have to worry about making a fool of your self. Build it and share it with just a few friends before you start sharing it with the world. Leaning house photo courtesy of http://www.flickr.com/photos/dahlstroms/
