03/19/12 EdisonLearning, Inc. Challenge In 1999, San Jose-Edison Academy opened as a charter school in the West Covina Unified School District in California. West Covina struggled with student achievement, in part due to the shifting demographics in the district which included a growing Hispanic/Latino population. San Jose-Edison Academy was no exception to these challenges. When the school opened, over 70% of the students were reading below grade level. Result San Jose-Edison Academy’s stellar reputation speaks for itself. Each year there is a waiting list of several hundred students wanting to attend the school. Through the years, the school has grown. The original school was for grades K-5, serving 600 students. The school now serves grades K-8 with almost 1,200 students.
