Most of the B-Schools in India are facing problems in placing their students. Recruiters claim that the reason for this is the absence of required skill-sets in the students. The challenge is in identifying the skills or personality traits which lead to good placements. In this study, personality traits were borrowed from the psychological concept of OCEAN. Ten traits were short-listed and the objective was to find out if there is a correlation between them and CGPA (academic achievement) and Salary Obtained during placements. The study, which was carried out in a reputed B-school in Bangalore (India), revealed that out of these 10 traits,only confidence has a correlation with salary. The traits which have correlation with CGPA are self-motivation and confidence. Another aspect that was studied was the efficacy of a program called personality enhancement program- which forces students to learn from activities like public speaking, presentations etc.It was found that this program helps students to build their confidence levels and confidence is impacting, both, CGPA as well as salary. The study also found that there is no correlation between CGPA and Salary. SEM is also corroborating the above results, which were obtained through regression analysis and ANOVA.

Abstract This research investigated the relationship between the university student’s perception and knowledge about different concepts and terms used in the Islamic banking and products and services offered. Impact of age, gender, area of study, area of residence, CGPA and family’s monthly income on the perception and knowledge of students about Islamic banking was also analyzed. Data was collected from the postgraduate students (Respondents # 60) selected randomly from two public sectors universities (Sindh Agriculture University Tando jam and University of Sindh) along with one private sectors (ISRA) university of Hyderabad. Simple linear regressions were used in order to check the impact of socioeconomic characteristics on the knowledge and perception of students. University students were mainly surveyed to assess the knowledge and perception of country’s intellectual cream of Islamic banking crop. Results showed that religious sincerity, not the better knowledge of Islamic banking was the strongest predictor of personal banking performances. Result reflected that overall perception and knowledge of students was significantly different from zero. Result suggested that students had better perception about the Islamic banking but poor knowledge. It was found that the Arabic language in specifying the products and services hindered the understandings of the students. Coefficient of age and income showed a positive relation with the perception and knowledge of students regarding Islamic banking in both public sector universities and Private Sector University. Result for area of study also displayed positive relation with the perception and knowledge of students regarding Islamic banking. Gender, area of residence and CGPA were not statistically significant which means these did not affected significantly on the perception and knowledge of students about Islamic banking however in case of private Sector University CGPA count to be factor, significantly effecting the perception of students. In our match towards scientific and technological advancement, we need nothing short of good performance in mathematics at all levels of schooling. In an effort to achieve this, this study investigated the impact of motivation on students' school academic achievement in mathematics in secondary schools using motivation measuring instrument and achievement test in mathematics. Six hypotheses were tested for significant at 0.05 margin of error using t test and analysis of variance ANOVA Results showed that gender difference and Parents Income were significant when impact of motivation on academic achievement was compared in male and female students. Also other result indicates significant difference when extent of motivation was taken as variable of interest on academic achievement in mathematics based on the degree of their motivation. Belief-change among students in mathematics learning is an elemental source of concern in the field of mathematics education. In the Philippines, BS Mathematics is one of the programs less chosen by many students. In spite of the efforts of the schools to market the program, it remains in the last options for those who are planning to take mathematics in the tertiary level. This study, through a qualitative research, explores the beliefs and feelings of BS Mathematics students of De La Salle Lipa about engaging in and learning Mathematics. It presents the change in beliefs of the students particularly those who did not intend to enroll in the said program. The views and feelings expressed by the subjects during a face-to-face interview reflect the kind of experience they have in school. The findings of the study indicate that (negative) beliefs of the students about pursuing mathematics as a program and learning the subject can change with the sound support of the school to provide an encouraging and learning environment. Such can eventually promote positive reception and achievement in the subject among the students.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the extent of students‟ reading comprehension and problem solving skills and identify teaching strategies that would address the problem in teaching problem solving in Mathematics. The research utilized mixed explanatory design. The subject consists of 189 grade 7 students who were part of the general section enrolled at Davao City National High School. Purposive sampling was used in identifying the respondents taking the reading comprehension test and problem solving test while random sampling was used in identifying participants for the key informant interview. The result of the study revealed that students reading comprehension and problem solving skills were at developing level. Moreover, reading comprehension skill was a predictor of problem solving skill. This means that students‟ problem solving skill is dependent on their reading skills. Results also showed from the conducted focus group discussion that students gave importance to vocabulary and main idea in learning problem solving. Furthermore, using differentiated instruction was the identified best teaching strategy to understand problem solving.

Supporting STEM Education in Secondary Science Contexts

A major focus of the current mathematics and science education reforms is on developing "literacy;" that is, helping students to understand and use the languages and ideas of mathematics and science in reasoning, communicating, and solving problems. In many ways, these standards documents are far more voluminous and complex than any scope and sequence in place in school systems today. But these documents are meant to be used as frameworks which provide guidance in education reform - they are not the definitive sources articulating to teachers how education reform must occur in their classrooms. Our plan in this discussion is to lay out the components of mathematics and science literacy as set down in the major reform documents and then, using selected how-to articles, to show how strategies and activities tried by math and science teachers have been used, or can be used, to promote math and science literacy among students. For pragmatic reasons only, our discussions often focus either on mathematics or science reform recommendations and examples. In doing this, we do not mean to imply that the elements of literacy in these disciplines are somehow separate or different. In fact, the separate discussions show how both the mathematics and science education communities, coming from different directions at different points in time, independently arrived at similar positions and many of the same recommendations regarding the ideas of literacy. In support of this discussion of the components of literacy, we also provide samples of resources, materials, and services that teachers might find useful in promoting mathematics and science literacy in their classrooms. The how-to articles are meant to be quick-reads that can be applied or adapted to classrooms directly. These articles are included to make it easier to decide which ones might be of special interest. Other articles and documents are intended as sources of a more general background. These documents provide some of the research bases and rationales behind some of the reform recommendations. Finally, we have included other references and information on databases which are not directly cited in the discussion but might prove valuable as additional sources of classroom ideas. During the last decade, the mathematics education community appeared to lack clear focus and a sense of direction. Although many conferences were held, papers written, and reports produced, there was not a general consensus regarding which direction mathematics education should head. The Standards offer an organization of important mathematical topics and abilities by grade-level groups (Kindergarten - grade 4, grades 5 - 8, and grades 9 - 12). Throughout the Standards the emphasis is: "knowing" mathematics is "doing" mathematics.
