Power View reports in SharePoint are RDLX files. In Excel, Power View sheets are part of an Excel XLSX workbook. Both versions need Silverlight – so no iPad.
Issue: The chocolate cake decoration; each has a different ‘spin’. Different definitions all over the place.Best practice: one place for your data. How do you decide what goes into your ‘Golden Record’?Power Pivot can help – it can be a prototyping tool, to help you to discover what the data means.
Best Practice: Don’t pass bad data onto the next person.See www.dataroundtable.com for more details.Bystanders are mostly Users (Consumers of Data), so often the most they could do is provide feedback.Be careful that users do not feel motivated to give anymore feedback, and hence end up being bystanders. If organizations create an atmosphere or environment where action is taken on feedback more quickly, and the whistle blower is thanked or rewarded, then the number of bystanders will significantly reduce.PowerPivot can help us to reduce bad data floating around. One source of the truth.

When you add tables and create relationships between them, Excel is creating a data model behind the scenes. A data model is a collection of tables and their relationships reflecting the real-world relationships between business functions and processes—for example, how Products relates to Inventory and Sales. PowerPivot is not a table. There are differences: v2In PowerPivot, you cannot add a row to a table by directly typing in a new row like you can in an Excel worksheet. But you can add rows by using Paste Append and by refreshing data.Data in an Excel worksheet is often variable and ragged: that is, one row might contain numeric data, and the next row might contain a graphic or string of text. In contrast, a table in PowerPivot is more like that in a relational database, in which each row has the same number of columns and most columns contain data.

Problem: While BI tools offer the ability to uncover information, they are simply too complex and time consuming for the majority of business users.Solution: When business users are excluded from the solution selection process, their need for simplicity is completely overlooked. In some instances executives and managers are technical enough to use a BI tool, but they don’t have the time to work with a BI tool and navigate a data warehouse to produce the information they need. Most people need a faster, easier way to get the information they need than that provided by a BI tool.Top 10
Problem: Excel wreaks havoc (or rather, the bad use of Excel!) on quality of information. Manual. Prone to errors. Solution: Make it more reliable. Use PowerPivot, forexample. Stop using unregulated, non-secure datamarts.
Problem: technology can help you to solve business problems. It does not necessarily do it for you. Don’t select a BI tool without a specific need. Information should be given in the right context; find the driver behind it. Solution: Identify the problems first. Meet that need. Any new technology will need to support the processes and the people, as well as the data. Specify how timely information delivered in the right context can accelerate a process, reduce costs, or improve productivity in a particular area. Do not start the project for a general purpose!
