Breast cancer treatment
1. Breast Cancer Treatment
There are currently 2.6 million breast
cancer survivors living in America.
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor,
formed from a cluster of cancerous
cells that starts in one or both breasts.
The tumor can grow into the tissue
around it, sometimes spreading to
other parts of the body.
Nearly 630 people are diagnosed with
breast cancer every single day in
America. It is the second most
prevalent cancer in women in
America, but also one of the most
treatable, if it is detected early.
However, the side effects of
conventional breast cancer treatment
programs can last for years and even
cause further health complications in
later years.
Complications of Conventional Breast Cancer Treatment
Studies show that complications from breast cancer treatment can last for up to
six years after diagnosis. These complications included skin irritations from the
radiation therapy, fatigue, weight gain, surgery related issues and heart
conditions.
A further complication of breast cancer treatment is impaired bone marrow
function as a result of the damage caused by intensive chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy is especially designed to kill fast growing cells, like cancer cells.
However, bone marrow stem cells also grow rapidly. This means that, during
chemotherapy treatment, the bone marrow is damaged. Although in most breast
cancer patients the bone marrow recovers following treatment, some breast
cancer survivors develop leukemia later on in life as a result of the damage
caused by the treatment.
Avoiding Bone Marrow Damage
One increasingly common method of breast cancer treatment is a bone marrow
transplant following chemotherapy. The patient’s own peripheral blood stem cells
or bone marrow cells are harvested prior to any chemotherapy treatment and
stored. This allows the patient to be given a very high dose of chemotherapy,
which will destroy all of the cancer cells as well as all of the bone marrow cells.
After treatment the stored cells are transplanted back to the patient, where they
reproduce to form new, healthy bone marrow, free of the mutations and damage
that arises from conventional breast cancer treatment.
Alternative Breast Cancer Treatment
2. Alternative breast cancer treatment has significantly fewer side effects in
comparison to conventional breast cancer treatment. Functional Medicine is one
alternative approach to breast cancer treatment that optimizes the patient’s
health own a cellular health and provides immune support before using cutting
edge treatments to weaken cancer cells, which are then attacked by the boosted
immune system.
With the increase in cancer treatment options available to all cancer patients,
it is important for individuals to research the options fully in order to find the best
cancer treatment program for them. Assessing the requirements of the condition,
of the patient and of the treatment program will help patients to fully understand
the impact of the treatment, on their current condition and on their future health.
