1. REPORTED SPEECH There are two ways of relating what a person has said:” direct & indirect ”
2. Direct speech We repeat the original speaker’s exact words; e.g. He said,”I have lost my keys.” Direct speech is generally found in plays, conversations in books and quotations.
3. Indirect Speech: We give exact meaning of a remark or speech, without using the speaker’s exact words. e.g. He said that he had lost his keys. He said he had lost his keys.
4. When we turn direct speech into indirect speech some changes are neccessary.
5. Direct Indirect “ I watch TV everyday”said Joe. Joe said he watched TV, “ I’ m watching TV”said Joe. Joe said he was watching TV. “ I watched TV”said Joe. Joe said he had watched TV. “ I have watched TV”said Joe. Joe said he had watched TV. “ I will watch TV”said Joe Joe said he would watch TV. “ I’ m going to watch TV” said Joe. Joe said he was going to watch TV “ I can watch TV”said Joe. He said he could watch TV “ I may watch TV”said Joe He said that he might watch TV “ I must watch TV”said Joe He said he had to watch TV. “ I have to watch TV”said Joe.
