Internet safety is more than simply protecting our students from inappropriate websites. It is teaching them responsible Internet behavior so they are safe both in and out of the classroom.
"I am safe" is referring to a student's individual behavior online. It encompasses what every person is responsible for while using the Internet and choices students have for problem-solving when safety issues arise. Guidelines: Students understand what is personal information and how to protect it. E.G. Usernames and passwords Students will understand the potential risks to sharing personal information and how to report issues. E.G. Cyber bullying, Spam, Scams
"I am secure" refers to a student's responsibility to not only their safety, but the safety and security of the network on which their computer is connected. Guidelines: Students will understand potential risks to one's computer and the network. E.G. Downloads, virus protection. Students will make responsible choices to prevent security risks. E.G. Computer pop-ups, spyware, malware.
"I am ethical" is referring to a student's responsibility to give credit where credit is due. Just like printed texts must be referenced when used by others, works that are available in the virtual world must be cited and credited, even when they are royalty free resources. Guidelines: Recognize authorship and how we use the creative works of others. E.G. Creative Commons, copyright, fair use
