UGV 602 Fundamentals Course
Objectives
• Describe the missions and applications of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV)
• Understand the differences between off-road and on-road UGV (or self-driving cars)
• Be able to develop requirements for UGV design
• Understand the different sensors used in the three classes of UGV
• Be able to understand different propulsion and traction methods, and list common UGV drive
train components with their strengths and weaknesses. Understand the geometry of
Ackerman steering and slip-skid steering.
• Understand the strengths and weaknesses of UGV data links and com & latency
• Basic understanding of mathematics describing robot arms & manipulators (Polar /Cartesian)
• Be able to describe the basic operations of indoor navigation by various methods (SLAM,
odometery, beacons, obstacle avoidance, right-hand-rule, etc)
• Understand the techniques by which UGV’s can operate on roads and in traffic by using
various sensors and algorithms, and explain why GPS can’t keep a UGV on the road.
• Be able to explain how UGV’s can be tested for safety in general terms
• Be able to describe and list the basic parts of a UGV lifecycle (documents, design, design
reviews, prototypes, testing, acceptance, production, sustainment, retirement)
• Be able to discuss the future applications of Unmanned Ground Vehicles and Self-Driving
Cars, including implications for current and future technology

Instructor
• Francis X. Govers III is the designer of over 20 unmanned vehicles – land, sea, and air, and
has customers from NASA to NASCAR. He grew up in a small town called
Houma, Louisiana, sixty miles south of New Orleans. Francis started his career as a Space
Communications Specialist in the US Air Force, and after getting out of the service and
finishing college at Texas State University, he worked at NASA as the lead engineer for
command and control on the International Space Station. Other notable positions have
included Director of the TASC Advanced Simulation Laboratory, Head of Flight Simulation
for F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and inventor of the Decision Support Center for SGI. Francis
has an extensive background in robotics and unmanned vehicles, as the Deputy Chief
Engineer for Unmanned Ground Vehicles for the US Army’s Future Combat Systems, a
participant in the first DARPA Grand Challenge race, a part of the DARPA EATR team, and as
Chief Engineer for Elbit Systems of America. He is a commercial rated pilot, a member of
the Commemorative Air Force and the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), and served on
the Board of Directors of the National Space Society. He has received numerous awards
for his work, including five outstanding achievement awards from NASA, a Boeing Spirit
Award, the Explorer Award from the National Space Society, and part of the team named
“10 World Changing Ideas” from Scientific American Magazine. Mr. Govers is a nationally
published author, public speaker, and artist, and is a regular contributor to Robot
Magazine.
