Word It Out creates word clouds out of any text that you paste into the word cloud generator. Once the word cloud is created you can customize the size and color scheme of the cloud. You can also customize the font used in your word cloud. The feature of Word It Out that I like the best is that you can choose to have Word It Out ignore any word or words you choose. Ignoring words keeps them out of the word cloud. Word clouds created using Word It Out can be shared publicly by using the embed code provided by Word It Out. Applications for Education Just as with Wordle, Word It Out can be a good resource for students to use to quickly identify the words used most frequently in a text. Create a word cloud and have students discuss why certain words were used frequently by an author.
Jing is a free screencasting tool available as a Mac or Windows download. Using Jing you can record videos of your computer screen to visually demonstrate and orally explain to viewers how to perform a task on their own computers. You can also use Jing to take screenshots on which you can then draw and label. Jing makes it easy for teachers to create short screencasts and screenshots to explain to students how to use a new piece of software or a new website. Screencast can be particularly useful if you're students are going to be doing work online away from your classroom. Post your screencasts online and your students can watch them when you're not available to answer their "how-to" questions. Voice Thread is a great tool for hosting online conversations about pictures and or documents. Voice Thread can be used to connect classrooms around the world to create a global conversation. http://howtovoicethread.wikispaces.com/Moderation
Etherpad is a free tool that allows users to collaborate in real real time. There’s no need to refresh your screen with Etherpad, it automatically updates every .5 seconds! To top it off, there are no sign-ins required.
Simply Box is a browser extension that helps you organize and share things that you find on the web. Simply Box is a little different than your typical social bookmarking service because instead of saving and sharing links you can save and share screen captures. The Simply Box browser extension allows you to take a screen capture of a webpage or part of a page, save it, share it, or file it in a "box." The boxes of Simply Box appear at the bottom of your browser. Users can drag their findings into a box. Applications for Education Simply Box does essentially the same things as most social bookmarking services and web research organizer. For students that process information better when it is visualized or put in graphic organizers the box concept may help them more than a bookmarking service. Evernote can be downloaded and installed on your computer or you can use the web-based version, both are free. Evernote can be used to copy parts of websites and put into a notebook for later use. Evernote can also be used to write notes on your computer, on a mobile device, or on paper to be put into a notebook for later use. Your notebook uses tags to find your notes for you when you need them later. Applications for Educators Evernote is a good utility for students using the Internet for research. Rather than copying and pasting to a word document or bookmarking websites to then later search through students can save to Evernote and quickly revisit the information they need.
