Taking WordPress As A CMS, To The Limit
March 5, 2011
Who Are You?

• Josh Guffey

• @jguffey (twitter)

• Lead Developer, The Pancake Movement (Mmm pancakes!)

  • thepancakemovement.com

• agencynet (WordPress & Drupal development)

  • Taught me (almost) everything I know
What are we doing?

• Making a Portfolio site

• Famous 5 minute WP install

• Find and install a useful theme

• Make some Widgets, Pages, Posts

• Turn this thing into a portfolio site (Add some Portfolio Pieces)
Why WordPress? Why Themes?

• We want a free portfolio site!

• Shows us how WordPress can be used as a CMS (Content Management
  System), without using any code.
How are we going to pull that off?

• What do you need?

  • Hosting

  • patients (This may take awhile the first time)

  • WordPress

  • A Good Theme
1) Install WP
• 5 minute install, super easy.
• Local environment, but FTP would work pretty much the same way.
  • Create a database (this is the hard part)
  • Follow the WP install process
2) Find and install a good portfolio theme.
• Portfolio Press 0.5.4 (http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/portfolio-
 press)
• Tons of others available at (http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/
 search.php?q=portfolio)
3) Make some Widgets
4) Make some Pages, Posts
5) Make some Portfolios
Done!
• Would have cost $$$
• No Code!

                        Saved so much $$$!!
That was fun

• Looks Generic?
   • You can download other WordPress themes, it doesn’t have to be a
portfolio, some allow custom colors and imagery.
   • For a unique and custom theme, hire a developer or agency. Once
you already have a WP up and running, Theme development isn’t too
     expensive.
• Pro Tip
   • Make sure you are settled on a theme before you create your Pages,
     Posts, ect.
• WordPress Support
   • Forums (http://wordpress.org/support/)
   • FAQ (http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ)
   • Troubleshooting (http://codex.wordpress.org/Troubleshooting)
Questions?

             @jguffey
