By Jeremy Harvey Alternative Energy
What Is Energy? Energy is a quantity that is understood as the ability to do work. This quantity can be assigned to any particle object, or system of objects as a consequence of its physical state.
Alternative way of Producing Energy! Wind Power Solar Power Battery Power
WIND POWER Wind power this type of energy harnesses the power of the wind to propel the blades of wind turbines. These turbines cause the rotation of magnets, which creates electricity.
WINDTURBINES This a picture of the wind turbines used to produce energy. The blades on the turbine causes the rotations of magnets which creates energy.
Pros and Cons of Wind Power Causes no pollution Beneficial to people living in remote areas that can not reach main power plants. Farming and grazing can still take place in land occupied by turbines. Sitting cost are low because of the ability to coexist with agricultural fields.
Cons of Wind Power Winds vary from day to day little wind causes less energy consumption. May effect bird migration Consider to be eyesores or obstruction because of vast size Also effect radar and Doppler weather radar these radar sometimes pick them up.
Solar power involves using solar cell to convert sunlight into electricity, using sunlight hitting solar thermal panels to convert sunlight to heat water or air, using sunlight hitting a parabolic mirror to heat water (producing steam), or using sunlight entering windows for passive solar heating of a building.wouldbe advantageous to place solar panels in the regions of highest solar radiation Solar Power
Picture of solar panels
Pro of Solar Power Imposes no fuel cost Renewable resources as long as the sun exists Causes no air pollution Very effective for heating such as heating water, home heaters and solar ovens Also very effective in remote areas where power companies can not be reached
Cons of Solar Power Much more expensive that typically ways of producing energy Solar heat and electricity is not available at night and may be unavailable because of weather conditions therefore storage is needed. Solar cells produce DC which must be convert to AC (using a grid tie inverter) which incurs a 4-12% energy loss Chemical used to produce these cells are extremely hazardous
Battery Power Batteries are used to store energy in a chemical form
Batteries
Pro of battery use Operation of a battery electric vehicle is approximately 2 to 4 cents per mile, about a sixth the price of operating a gasoline vehicle The use of battery electric vehicles may reduce the dependency on fossil fuels, depending on the source of the electricity. Battery electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than internal combustion engines, thus improving the reliability of the vehicle
Cons of battery use Current battery technology is expensive Some of the principal materials required in battery production, such as Lithium, are becoming increasingly scarce Some batteries (like the Gel battery and the Lead-acid battery) are highly toxic Spent vehicle batteries present a potential environmental hazard Some batteries perform less efficiently in cold weather, and a battery electric vehicle lacks a convenient source of waste engine heat to warm the passenger compartment
