2. Mat 16:13-20 ESV Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea
Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man
is?" (14) And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah,
and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." (15) He said to them, "But
who do you say that I am?" (16) Simon Peter replied, "You are the
Christ, the Son of the living God." (17) And Jesus answered him,
"Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed
this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. (18) And I tell you, you are
Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it. (19) I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and
whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (20) Then he
strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
3. Who Do People Say that the Son of Man
iMsa?t 16:13-14 ESV Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea
Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son
of Man is?" (14) And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say
Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
First Joh 1:25-27 ESV They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing,
if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" (26)
John answered them, "I baptize with water, but among you stands
one you do not know, (27) even he who comes after me, the
strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."
Joh 1:32-34 ESV And John bore witness: "I saw the Spirit descend from
heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. (33) I myself did not know
him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom
you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the
Holy Spirit.' (34) And I have seen and have borne witness that this is
the Son of God."
Second John was Dead!!!
Mat 14:10-12 ESV He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, (11)
and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she
brought it to her mother. (12) And his disciples came and took the body
and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.
2Ki 2:11-12 ESV And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots
of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up
by a whirlwind into heaven. (12) And Elisha saw it and he cried, "My
father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw
him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two
pieces.
Mat 17:4-5 ESV And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are
here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for
Moses and one for Elijah." (5) He was still speaking when, behold, a
bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This
is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
6. Who Do You Say that I AM?
Mat 16:13-14 ESV Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea
Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son
of Man is?" (14) And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say
Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
Mat 16:15-16 ESV He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
(16) Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God."
Confession Essential to Salvation
Mat 10:32-33 NKJV "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men,
him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. (33) But
whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father
who is in heaven.
7. How Did You Know That?
Mat 16:17 ESV And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father
who is in heaven.
Mat 12:25-32 ESV Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom
divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself
will stand. (26) And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself.
How then will his kingdom stand? (27) And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul,
by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. (28)
But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God
has come upon you. (29) Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and
plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may
plunder his house. (30) Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever
does not gather with me scatters. (31) Therefore I tell you, every sin and
blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not
be forgiven. (32) And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be
forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either
in this age or in the age to come.
8. How Did You Know That?
Mat 16:17 ESV And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father
who is in heaven.
Mat 11:4-6 ESV And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear
and see: (5) the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed
and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news
preached to them. (6) And blessed is the one who is not offended by me."
9. How Did You Know That?
Mat 16:17 ESV And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father
who is in heaven.
Heb 2:1-4 ESV Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we
have heard, lest we drift away from it. (2) For since the message
declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or
disobedience received a just retribution, (3) how shall we escape if we
neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it
was attested to us by those who heard, (4) while God also bore witness
by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit
distributed according to his will.
10. How Do We Know?
Mat 16:17 ESV And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father
who is in heaven.
1Co 15:3-8 ESV For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also
received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
(4) that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance
with the Scriptures, (5) and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the
twelve. (6) Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one
time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. (7)
Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. (8) Last of all, as to
one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
11. Why Did HE Come?
Mat 16:18-19 ESV And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will
build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (19) I
will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind
on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall
be loosed in heaven."
1. He came to build His Church – His Kingdom, Dan.
2:42; Mark 9:1; Acts 1:8, Acts 2:1-4, Col. 1:13
2. To give the keys to the kingdom of heaven
12. Why Did HE Come?
Mat 16:20-21 ESV Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one
that he was the Christ. (21) From that time Jesus began to show his
disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the
elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be
raised.
1. He came to build His Church – His Kingdom, Dan.
2:42; Mark 9:1; Acts 1:8, Acts 2:1-4, Col. 1:13
2. To give the keys to the kingdom of heaven
3. He came to die on the Cross.
Mat 20:28 ESV even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to
serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
13. Why Did He Come?
Joh 3:16-17 ESV "For God so loved the world,
that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life.
(17) For God did not send his Son into the world
to condemn the world, but in order that the world
might be saved through him.
Rom 5:6-9 ESV For while we were still weak, at
the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (7) For
one will scarcely die for a righteous person--
though perhaps for a good person one would dare
even to die-- (8) but God shows his love for us in
that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
(9) Since, therefore, we have now been justified
by his blood, much more shall we be saved by
him from the wrath of God.
14. Why Did He Come?
Rom 6:3-8 ESV Do you not know that all of us
who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death? (4) We were buried
therefore with him by baptism into death, in order
that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness
of life. (5) For if we have been united with him
in a death like his, we shall certainly be united
with him in a resurrection like his. (6) We know
that our old self was crucified with him in order
that the body of sin might be brought to nothing,
so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (7)
For one who has died has been set free from sin.
(8) Now if we have died with Christ, we believe
that we will also live with him.
