3. We are a Community of Neighbors
For a Christian there is no option about
being a Good Neighbor
4. What shall I do to inherit Eternal Life?
Luk 10:25-26 ESV And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test,
saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (26) He said to
him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"
1. The Lawyer posing the questing was not sincere.
2. The greatest question
3. The Law refers to the Law of Moses (will not mention
Baptism, confession, etc.)
4. How do you read (interpret); turns the question on the Lawyer.
5. What shall I do to inherit Eternal Life?
Luk 18:18-23 ESV And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I
do to inherit eternal life?" (19) And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call
me good? No one is good except God alone. (20) You know the
commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal,
Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'" (21) And he
said, "All these I have kept from my youth." (22) When Jesus heard
this, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and
distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come,
follow me." (23) But when he heard these things, he became very sad,
for he was extremely rich.
Just knowing the answer IS
not enough
6. Luk 10:27-28 ESV And he answered,
"You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with
all your strength and with all your mind,
and your neighbor as yourself." (28) And
he said to him, "You have answered
correctly; do this, and you will live."
Luk 11:28 ESV But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word
of God and keep it!"
Joh 13:17 ESV If you know these things, blessed are you if you do
them.
Joh 14:15 ESV "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Joh 15:14 ESV You are my friends if you do what I command you.
7. Luk 10:29 ESV But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And
who is my neighbor?"
Luk 10:30-35 ESV Jesus replied, "A man was going down from
Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and
beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. (31) Now by chance a
priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on
the other side. (32) So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and
saw him, passed by on the other side. (33) But a Samaritan, as he
journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had
compassion. (34) He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on
oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an
inn and took care of him. (35) And the next day he took out two denarii
and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever
more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.'
8. He Had Compassion
Luk 10:33 ESV But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he
was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
We Must Have Compassion For
our Neighbors
9. Which of These Proved to be a Neighbor
Luk 10:36-37 ESV Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a
neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" (37) He said, "The
one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do
likewise."
Proved neighbour to him that fell (plēsion gegonenai tou empesontos).
Second perfect infinitive of ginomai and second aorist active participle of
empiptō. Objective genitive, became neighbour to the one, etc. Jesus has
changed the lawyer’s standpoint and has put it up to him to decide which
of “these three” (toutōn tōn triōn, priest, Levite, Samaritan) acted like a
neighbour to the wounded man. (Robertson’s Word Pictures)
Act like a Neighbor
We Must Show Mercy on Others
10. Which of These Proved to be a Neighbor
Luk 10:36-37 ESV Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a
neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" (37) He said, "The
one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do
likewise."
Mercy – (eleos) mercy: kindness or good will towards the miserable
and the afflicted, joined with a desire to help them
Gal 6:9-10 ESV And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due
season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, as we have
opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are
of the household of faith.
11. Go & Do
Luk 10:37 ESV He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus
said to him, "You go, and do likewise."
Mat 28:18-20 ESV And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to me. (19) Go therefore and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of
the age."
Mar 16:15-16 ESV And he said to them, "Go into all the world and
proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. (16) Whoever believes and is
baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
