2. Syndrome
a group of symptoms that together are
characteristic of a specific disorder, di
sease, or the like.
3. Hemosiderosis
Pulmonary hemosiderosis (PH) is characterized by
repeated episodes of intra-alveolar bleeding that
lead to abnormal accumulation of iron as
hemosiderin in alveolar macrophages and
subsequent development of pulmonary fibrosis
and severe anemia
4. Goodpasteur Syndrome
Goodpasture syndrome is a pulmonary-renal syndrome, which is a
group of acute illnesses involving the kidneys and lungs.
A chronic pulmonary hemosiderosis, usually associated with
glomerulonephritis and characterized by a cough with
hemoptysis, dyspnea, anemia and progressive renal failure
Glomerulonephritis
anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antibodies -----
(collagen Killers)
bleeding in the lungs
5. GPS
immune cells produce antibodies against a specific region
of collagen. The antibodies attack the collagen in the
lungs and kidneys.
8. Ernest Goodpasture
describedthe syndrome during the
influenza pandemic of 1919 when he
reported on a patient who died from
bleeding in the lungs and kidney failure.
9. WHAT CAUSES IT?
Hereditary
Autoimmune Disorder
Smoking
Hydrocarbon solvents
Men are eight times more likely to
be affected than women
10. Manifestations:
Loss of appetite, fatigue, and weakness are common early symptoms.
Lung symptoms may include:
Coughing up blood(hemoptysis)
Dry cough
Shortness of breath
Kidney and other symptoms include:
Bloody urine
Burning sensation when urinating
Nausea and vomiting
Pale skin
Swelling (edema) in any area of the body, especially in the legs
11. Diagnostics:
Urinalysis
Blood test
Chest x ray
Biopsy
12.
13. Treatment:
Corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone)
immunosuppressive medications, such as
cyclophosphamide
Plasmapheresis
removes whole blood from the body and replaces the plasma with
fluid, protein, or donated plasma
14. What if its Severe??
Hemodialysis
Kidney Transplant
15. Additional points to remember
Never sniff glue or siphon gasoline with your
mouth, which expose the lungs to hydrocarbon solvents
People who smoke or use hair dyes appear to be at
increased risk for this condition. Exposure to hydrocarbon
fumes, metallic dust, and certain drugs may also raise a
person’s risk.
16. PARANOID BOX :
“Oh no… I might have Goodpasture’s Syndrome…”
