DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 8 JOSH KIM 8304548
• “Design of a large scale multi – residential project in China, project was about maximising
the sunlight conditions for each apartment, focus on single condition – sunshine and on
primary shape – cube”
• Architect is the conductor and the programs / systems used to generate plans are all the
different elements that make up the orchestra
• The reason for designing with logic alone allows for a reusable architectural theory (like a
scientific or mathematical theory) instead of a one off theory that is devised by the individual
architect – this reusable architectural theory guarantees efficiency?
• Have the ability to delegate much of the time consuming work to a program (faster and more
efficient)
• Ability to generate ideas, forms, plans etc quickly to then refine or pick the best ones.

Watanabe – Sun God City From Induction Design
EMERGENCE – CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT WEEK 8 JOSH KIM 8304548
Concept Development
•Looking at how to generate forms – what forces should influence?
• What initial form should be influenced?
Aims:
- Explore the relationship layers have with each other and
how they react when under some force or stress
- Test the level of transparency of each layer
Experiment 1 – Equipment
- 2 x Half Onion
- 750ml Saucepan
- ~ 500ml of water
- Electric cook top
Method
1) Bring water to boil with half onion (full heat)
2) When boiling point is reached drop to half heat
3) Record results every 5 minutes for a total of 20 minutes
4) 500ml of Water
Experiment 1 (build on from previous week)
EMERGENCE – PYSICAL EXPERIMENTS WEEK 8 JOSH KIM 8304548
Findings:
- Layers started to raise and open around the core
- Core not necessarily in the centre of the subject
- Discolouring / transparency on the thinner outer layers
- The more it was submerged or exposed to the heat stress
the more it deformed and changed

Experiment 1 Findings – Relevance to concept
EMERGENCE – PHYSICAL EXPERIMENTS WEEK 8 JOSH KIM 8304548
Findings:
-All the layers varied in thickness and subsequent transparency (wasn’t linear or as predicted)
- The layers surrounding the core were thicker and smaller – protecting the core?
-Networks of structural fibre became closer together as the layers became smaller
-Ideas that can be used:
- Levels of transparency in the layers of the building – lends itself to open, semi enclosed and
enclosed areas within the building
- Create the effect of a lucid structure where the form is not “concrete”
Aim:
- Model the effects of directional forces upon a subject, the subject being 3 transparent boxes inside each other.
- Have these forces deform the subject
- Forces can include prominent wind directions, flow of traffic – human traffic through site etc
Method:
- Using rigid and soft bodies with altered gravity forces
- Particle flow as an alternative
Outcome:
- In an attempt to model object moving in an direction, the direction of the gravity was altered to allow the objects to move
towards the subject however the subject needed to be constrained
- Constrains were placed upon the subject however it continued to move and create different forms without the influence of the
objects.
- Failed attempt at original aim however a new unexpected outcome was created – questionable as to relevance or use.
- The use of constraints allow the forms to move freely within the confines and generate new forms – objects within the
constraints could be modelled as different shapes in greater numbers and could potentially generate new unexpected forms.
