Mr. Kleon is a
1.writer and artist living in Austin, Texas.
2.author of two bestselling books: Steal Like
an Artist, a manifesto for creativity in the
digital age, and Newspaper Blackout, a
collection of poetry made by redacting
newspaper articles with a permanent
marker.

5. Experimental Artists
Have been creating blackout art long
before Mr. Kleon, but it’s a fun way to
“speak out” about an event in the world,
controversy, issue or make a
statement.
6. Your Task
Instead of starting with a blank page and
worrying about what in the world you
should write, you are simply going to
eliminate words you don’t need!
Only rule: May not use an already
completed sentence in the document.
7. Jobs
1. Give each person in the group a # (1,2,3 or 4)
2. #4 – Pick up the table number bag of markers
for your group and give one marker to each
person
3. #2 – Pick up a stack of articles for your group
4. #1 – Pass out the articles
5. #3 – Set timer to 18 minutes. (Hyperlink on
Desktop)
8. To Complete
1. Create a sentence about yourself from the words in
the newspaper article
2. With your marker, “blackout” all the words you
don’t need to write that sentence.
3. On a 3x5 card:
1. Creatively write your first name and last initial
2. Write your sentence using the unmarked words
from your article
4. You will be sharing your sentence with the class
tomorrow.
5. The article and 3x5 card are due tomorrow
