Managing your reputation online
In the world of PR, life’s a

• Preparation
• Interest
• Tone
• Conversations
• Here and now!
Why is good storytelling important for
Public Relations?
• Effective PR is a formalised process for
  generating interest and driving
  understanding amongst different
  audiences using dialogue (conversations,
  editorial and networking) rather than
  monologue (advertising, direct mail) to
engage individuals and groups with the
  objective of changing perceptions,
  managing reputations, driving
  understanding and influencing behaviour.
Why social media matters to your business

   ‘Traditional’ PR
Social Media Landscape
P - Preparation
• The key to 'pitching' a story successfully is
to understand what the other person really
  wants, so start by LISTENING!
I – Interest

• Showing interest helps create a rapport and
  increase your ability to influence
• It's about what you say and how you say it
• Success takes commitment and participation, so if
  you get involved, stay involved!
• Links are a principal currency of this world.
Everyone loves links – and there are tools to
estimate your net worth based on links to your
  blog.
T - Tone
• Good story tellers control their tone and
communicate with gravitas. It helps them be taken
  seriously and be memorable
• There are 3 very fast things you can do to raise
  your gravitas level online.
• Add value
   – Repurposed marketing spiel will impress nobody, and win you
     no readers
• Be honest
   – Remember your social media netiquette and abide by the rules
• Be the authority on your product/company
   – Neediness, uncertainty and negativity is a gravitas killer
C – Conversations & content

• Powerful openings help give you the impact and
  audience connection that you need
• Your key to success is to work out what content's
going to help you connect with this particular
audience, so make it relevant and make sure it
  reflects your key points
• Develop a contagious and consistent message if
you're trying to tell a memorable story.
• Can I express my idea in one word? Can I
  express it in 3-5 words?
H – Here and Now

• Most kinds of social media thrive on their
  connectedness and the commonalities in
  their community
• Conversations about you, your business
and your ecosystem will happen with or
without you, so why stand back?
• Experimenting will help give you
confidence and there’s no better time than
  now to get involved!
! – Energy and Passion build a good story

 • A good story teller online engages people and
makes them want to repeat what they have
   heard
 • Enthusiasm is contagious
 • Passion shows conviction and builds
   confidence
 • Find your own style...
