The opening sequence shows televised footage of violent riots and attacks. The camera pans to reveal a monkey-like creature wired to a bench, looking confused at the television screens. A security camera then shows masked men investigating, who discover monkeys shrieking in cages. One man is taking photos as the group approaches the wired monkey. Their aim is to rescue at least one monkey, but the scientist warns they are infected with 'rage'. When releasing one, it attacks the woman, and she vomits blood after it is removed.
1. Analysis of an opening sequence
The film opens to a television screen showing people being attacked by other
people. Some shots show riots in which policemen are hitting civilians with
batons, while others show people fighting amongst each other. One even depicts
several men hitting the hung corpse of another man. The camera then zooms out,
panning to the left at the same time to reveal several other televisions showing
similar scenes of violence. It pans until we see a silhouette of a figure lying on a
bench, which seems to resemble a monkey. A high angle shot of the bench
reveals that the monkey like creature has wires attached to its head, suggesting
some form of experiment is taking place. An over the shoulder shot of the
television screens from the monkeys shoulder shows the monkey is looking
around, showing that it has a state of confusion and curiosity. A long shot of the
monkey on the bench then becomes a tracking shot, moving to the right. This
reveals a security camera that shows several men wearing masks. Two pass
straight away while the other signals to an unknown identity and then covers the
camera up with something. There are then several long shots and close ups of
the men looking through a window on a door. This is a blocking shot and shows
that these people shouldn’t be here. As they enter the room we can here
monkeys shrieking violently. One of the members of the group of people then
says ‘fucking hell!’ showing his alarmed reaction to the situation. Several shots of
the monkeys in their cages appear, with camera flashes after as the shots freeze.
We then see one of the masked men taking photographs with a camera, showing
this is what was making the flashes. The group then approaches the monkey on
the bench with the wires in its head. There is then an eye line match of what the
female member of the group is looking at, which is the televisions. She then
whispers ‘Oh god’, which is then met with a reaction from one of the other
unmasked members of the group, ‘keep your shit together, if you want to get him
out of here’. It then becomes clear that the aim of these people is to rescue at
least one of the monkeys. A tracking shot then reveals a man in a lab coat who is
probably responsible for the experiment on the monkey. When the group notices
him they give chase as he runs away. In one shot we see him pass a table with a
bowl containing a monkeys head. When they catch the man an argument breaks
out. Shot reverse shot is used as the scientist tries to tell the group that the
monkeys are infected with ‘rage’. The group ignores this and tries to release a
monkey. A long shot of this monkey in its cage shows it running towards the
woman that opens the cage. The monkey attacks her, a sequence of close shaky
close ups show the state of confusion and panic. One of the men then hit the
monkey to get it off the woman. There is then a high angle close up of the woman
as she turns towards the floor and vomits blood. There are then screams as
several shots of the monkeys in there cages show their excitement for the ordeal.
