REAL WORLD EXAMPLES OF SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE CITIES Cities present a crucial challenge and opportunity in the coming decades, as more than 2.5 billion people are expected to be added to the world's urban areas by 2050. This presentation from Ani Dasgupta, Global Director, WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, explores real-world examples of how change has been made in some of the fastest growing cities and economies of the world and discuss actions to ensure sustainable urbanization in the years and decades ahead. There is strong evidence that improved economic productivity and resource efficiency that accompany urbanization can be achieved while simultaneously addressing the environmental and social externalities from rapid urban growth. Although a combination of technological, social and political innovation is necessary, a wide range of actionable solutions are currently available to address the challenges cities face across various sectors. 2015-16 is an unprecedented year of opportunity - with COP, SDG and Habitat III - for advancing action at the global and city level towards advancing sustainable urban growth.

Libya suffers from electricity shortages, and many challenges will have to be overcome to meet future increases in electrical demands. The deficiency of electricity generation in Libya is clearly manifested in the fact that demand on electricity still exceeds its supply as blackouts become more frequent. In peak demand time, blackouts and outages are the major phenomena in almost all the Libyan regions. Due to technical issues, illegal connections and throughout the lengthy civil war, the generation and transmission in addition to distribution functions suffered partial destruction and consequent outages. For all the mentioned problems, Renewable energy sources and technologies have potential to provide solutions to the long standing energy problems being faced by the Libyan electricity. Alternative renewable energy sources like solar energy technology can be an important part of Libyas plan not only to add new capacity but also to increase energy security, address environmental concerns, as well as to overcome energy shortage. Libya is very rich in solar energy resources and possesses large wasteland areas in the Sahara that represent 88 of the total area and much of this is relatively flat. Libya is one of the countries with the abundance of this type of energy, with a daily average of the sunshine reached to 8.1 kWh m2 day, and where annual solar activity more than 3500 kWh m2 year on the horizontal surface. Losses in the transmission and distribution system will be reduced since power is generated near loads. The grid availability and stability will increase and individuals can save money in their electricity bill and finally the generated power is clean and nonpolluting. This paper presents the main sources of alternative renewable energy in Libya and its potential besides the main reasons Libya is turning to alternative energy solutions to fully utilize its renewable energy resources, fulfill the energy demand in the future and to reduce the outages of electricity and carbon emissions. The study also found that, there is need to investigate more the potential of offshore wind, biomass, and hydro tide and wave thermal energy .The paper finishes with some conclusions and recommendations. All but 2 of China's 278 cities with municipal status have proposed low-carbon or eco-city targets, and over half have already begun construction to achieve these goals. However, the term "eco-city" is not clearly defined in China, and it is uncertain how many of these projects are living up to their hype. Eco-City Notes, is an online multimedia web platform that aims to provide a unique perspective on eco-city development on the ground in China. Our interdisciplinary analysis draws from the fields of architecture, international development, environmentalism, anthropology, and engineering to understand the impact of the explosive growth and development of eco-cities in China. This presentation highlights our latest research on the complex and evolving eco-city concept in China.

This presentation focuses on eco-city development initiatives in developing countries towards developing low carbon society. Rapid urbanization in developing countries may be the most significant demographic transformation in our century as it restructures national economies and reshapes the lives of billions of people. At the same time, urbanization has also contributed to environmental and socioeconomic challenges, including climate change, pollution, congestion, and the rapid growth of slums. But as a major style of residential environment, city, has been endowed new contents by new ideas ever emerged in the history and eco-city development has emerged as a way to address climate change issues in the context of developing sustainable cities in developing countries. Eco-cities have the potential to address many of the problems like climate change and socio-economic aspects associated with urban development, as does the concept of sustainable development in an urban setting. Drawing on lessons learned from the planning and development process of several low-carbon eco-cities, this paper explores the potential of an integrated urbanism approach for developing countries. The objective is not only to mitigate factors contributing to climate change, but to manage risk, maximize resilience, and promote the successful economic and social growth of the urban eco community in developing countries. An integrated urbanism approach to planning may give us the tools to leapfrog the environmental and public health costs of economic progress and create a new model for cities across the developing world.

Ted Rollins and Campus Crest Communities, today announced a partnership with SolarCity, a national leader in clean energy products and services, to install more than 9,000 solar panels on its student housing communities located in Greeley, Colorado; Flagstaff, Arizona; and Las Cruces, New Mexico. When complete, the initiative will: --Provide more than 2.3 million kilowatt-hours of renewable power annually --Offset electricity consumption by approximately 50 percent --Eliminate over 80 million pounds of annual carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of taking approximately 7,000 cars off the road for a year.

The recent advances in geo-informatics have been opening new opportunities in earthquake early warning and emergency management issues. In the last years, the geo-scientific community has recognized the added value of a geo-analytic approach in complex decision making processes for critical situations due to disastrous natural events such as earthquakes. In fact, recently, GIS-based solutions are investigated in several research projects such as SIT_MEW Project, aimed at the development of volcanic and seismic early warning systems (EWSs). In this project context, an innovative open source GIS system has been investigated and developed as integrated component of the seismic EWS. Its architecture consists in a geospatial database system, a local GIS application for analyzing and modelling the seismic event and its impacts and supporting post-event emergency management, a WEB-GIS module for sharing the geo-information among the public and private stakeholders and emergency managers involved in disaster impact assessment and response management.
