3. Here are the different types of anesthesia administered to
patients:
General – Used to render a patient unconscious during
surgery, general anesthesia can be given either through an IV or
inhaled through a mask.
Local – With a local anesthetic, the patient remains conscious
during surgery. The local anesthetic is used to numb a smaller
area of the body. If the area is larger, doctors may opt for a
regional anesthetic.
Regional – Regional anesthesia is given in instances where surgery
will be performed in a certain area of the body. One type of
regional anesthesia is the spinal anesthetic, where the patient
receives an injection in the lower back region to numb the lower
body. Another form of regional anesthesia is the epidural, which
is administered frequently for childbirth.
