- 2008 - An Ice shelf the size of Manhattan (USA) breaks away during winter, scientists believed this wouldn’t be possible
- We all need to do something, we cant all solve the worlds problems alone, we need others to help. It is important to demonstrate clearly and signal your intentions to act.
- Energy efficient design – in 2008 incandescent lamps still in use. LED’s lighting fittings can provide long life, and low energy alternative.
- Energy efficient design – Leaving lamps burning on a bright sunny day is plainly wasteful – Hong Kong
- Waste Management – Landfills are full to bursting where is the waste going? Away – there is no Away!
- Recycling – must be compulsory, not only for residential but also commercial operations. These bottles will be recycled to become paving blocks.
- The NEXT STEP FORWARD
- This is a typical industry/commercial model
- Often “Parks” are created to encourage grouping of similar business – BIG mistake
- Change is needed – Integrate NOT group. For example the “waste” product from power station is heat, and the flue gas desulphurisation plant waste product is gypsum. Therefore, group industry, use the waste steam and gypsum from the power station to feed the adjacent dry wall factory!! Don’t build more industrial “parks” build networks.
- How do we work?
- Different professions and groups are well insulated, there is little interaction between the different domains in the commercial environment. As a result solutions created in one domain are not utilized. Problems solved by nature, are not well advertised to other sectors.
- We need to improve communications with other sectors, engineers need to read nature journals/join societies and associations, one classic example is Biomimicry. We should be / need to be working together to prevent pollution and carbon emissions.
