Important thing to remember: I was not designing a Drupal brand. I was doing a logo for a version of Drupal, that would be relevant for 2-4 years until 9 would be introduced. Not reinventing or changing the Drupal word mark / brand. I wanted the D8 logo to extend the Drupal wordmark designed by Mark Boulton I prepared several concepts and created mood boards for them, elaborating on how the Drupal community could creatively use my proposed concepts to continue building the Drupal 8 experience, creating logo derivates, etc. It was to be emotional and express what we as a community think about Drupal 8
