A renowned New Jersey cardiologist
was injured severely in a drunk driving
automobile accident in
Hackensack, but it is the Excelsior
Apartment complex that will be footing
his medical bills. The complex was
tasked with paying out nearly $7.5
million to Dr. Henry Lau after a jury
found Excelsior responsible for
allowing an underage party that
served alcohol.

David Figueroa, 20 at the time of the
accident, sped into Lau early in the
morning while the doctor was walking his
dog. Lau, who was represented by New
York defense attorney Joe
Tacopina, suffered two broken legs, a
broken pelvis and back, and several
broken ribs. The apartment complex was
implicated in the accident due to its
hosting of a pool party where alcohol
was served and, apparently, IDs were

The defense also ensured that Lau’s
wife would be awarded $350,000 for
“loss of services,” as Dr. Lau will be
impaired for the remainder of his life.
