On National Teacher Day, meet the 2024-25 Kenan Fellows
Santiago de cali and the first habitants
1. SANTIAGO DE CALI
AND THE FIRST
INHABITANTS
Once upon a time, several
centuries ago, even before
the spanish arrived to
America, there were some
communities that lived in
the territory where
Santiago de Cali is located
in these days (One of you
know how were these
people called?)
2. COMMUNITIES THAT LIVED
IN THE PLACE WHERE
SANTIAGO DE CALI IS
LOCATED IN THESE DAYS
Well, in this place we
have some native’s
groups: Jamundies,
Timbas. the Colocos
in the middle, and
time after, the
Paeces, Pijaos and
Lilies.
3. SANTIAGO DE CALI AND
ITS FIRST INHABITANTS
This people had a life a little bit
different from ours. They
didn`t have tv, computers,
internet, cell phones or even
phones, didn`t have cars or
planes. (So What do you
think they did to have fun?
And what did they do to talk
With people who lived far away?
How did they do to travel to
distant places?
NEXT
4. HOW THEY HAD FUN
They had different ways to have
fun, instead of going to the
movies, watching tv or
connecting to internet, they used
to go fishing, or collecting seeds
and threads to make necklaces.
Although these people lived in
the mountains and away from a
river to fish, they did it in some
lakes and the BIG RIVER (Cauca´s
river)
BACK
5. HOW THEY TALKED WITH
PEOPLE FAR AWAY
To communicate with
other villages they sent
a guy with the
information, and he had
to go by walking.
BACK
6. HOW THEY TRAVELED TO DISTANT
PLACES
They never travel as far
as today, just short
distances and they did
it by walking.
Remember the horses
and cows were brought
by the Spanish.
BACK
7. SANTIAGO DE CALI AND
THE FIRST INHABITANTS
Also they have a different
way to communicate, a
different language, and
have a different diet,
they ate different things
(Do you know who were
the CALIMAS? One of
you have an idea of
what they ate?)
NEXT
8. THE CALIMAS
The native´s groups that lived in these
places belong to a biggest family:
the CALIMAS. We have a lake that
receives that name, and some of us
could think that it was because
they lived around that lake or at
least nearby. But the CALIMAS lived
all around the VALLE DEL CAUCA,
there were many small
communities that belong to that
family. And even every community
has its own boss, rules, people and
territory, they have some
characteristics in common.
BACK
9. WHAT THEY ATE
These communities ate
vegetables and different
things they grew. But
they also ate meat, but
it wasn´t beef or pork,
they ate some little
animals called the
GUATÍN, the GURRE and
the GÜAGÜA.
BACK
10. SANTIAGO DE CALI AND
THE FIRST INHABITANTS
Also their life was
different from ours
because of the way
they built towns. (Some
of you know what did
this people do to build
them? What did they
do when they got sick?
What did they wear?)
NEXT
11. HOW THEY BUILT
THEIR TOWNS
Those communities were
composed by small villages
with 15 to 20 persons. They
were mainly located in the
sides of the mountain and in
the river´s courses. The
villages were built with houses
from 10 to 10, some places
more and some other less.
They were big, rounded,
covered with straw, and there
were many small rivers with
potable water.
BACK
12. WHAT THEY DID
WHEN THEY GOT SICK
And when they got sick,
they never went to a
see a doctor, they went
to the Chaman or
Mama, (the magician
of the tribe) they took
a shower with plants
and in some times they
prepared drinks.
BACK
13. WHAT THEY WORE
Well, Men and women put in
their noses some gold´s nails
that they called CARICURIS.
Some of them had the size of
a finger. Sometimes they used
gold´s necklaces. Men used a
Little cotton blanket to cover
the front and other to the
back; Women used cotton
blankets to cover below the
hips.
BACK
14. THERE IS A LAST AND SHORT STORY
The most numerous communities of the west part
of the valley had a main chief named PETE or
PETECUY. He lived in a high land and had a house
with more than 400 skin´s villagers as walls
papers. There were other houses with that kind
of trophies but in a lower number; they were
neighbor enemies and had a biggest merit the
one who had killed more people. The women
participated in this fights and if they were
defeated, their meat would be the dinner.
