Provide this information: Date of Incorporation. Original sponsoring entity. Structure of Board. Past leaders of organization. Mission statement.
Give examples of strategic policy issues: Strategic Planning, Approval of major financing, Changes in by-laws, Employment of CEO. Give examples of Operational Issues: Employment of staff and organizational structure. Design of programs.
Provide examples of opportunities for board members to observe the programs. Are there volunteer activities for the board? Are there special programs in which they can attend and observe or participate? Its OK for board members to visit with residents and staff to better understand their needs and desires.
Provide specific ways for the board to better understand the roles of staff and how they interact with residents. Encourage the staff to “educate” the board about the challenges they face in their service to residents.
Describe the evaluation process and the timeline for the CEO. Does the board utilize an evaluation process for itself?
Describe how the organization is perceived in the community. Share brochures, newsletters and other communication vehicles the organization uses. Describe the fund development efforts. Explain the concept of “social accountability” to the board and give examples of how you meet this requirement.
Give the board a copy of the latest audit and current budget. Show the board the trends of the organization. Do you have a dashboard on the key financial indicators that you can show the board? Review the capital budget. Review the normal monthly financial statement.
Is there a strategic plan in place that can be shared with the board? Describe the planning process for budgeting, capital planning, new services and programs.
Show the typical agenda for a board meeting. Review the importance of everyone contributing to the meeting with their ideas and thoughts.
Ask the board members what particular areas of interest they have in the organization. What would they like to get out of their experience as a board member? What is their perception of the organization?
