Robert Hempal - 4 year comprehensive study of school reform (Kids and School Reform)
found there were basically four factions of teachers that emerge from each school

Cynic
The Cynic - Believe children are solely a product of their environment Nothing ever really
changes in education (what comes around, goes around)
This too will pass

The “Sleepy” teacher - sliding by, minimal effort, can have great potential but isn’t motivated,
flies under the radar, can be lazy and/or ill-prepared, rarely changes what s/he already has in
place, does what is easiest

Yes, but: These are the teachers who seem agreeable, positive, love to teach, often put in
extra time, but when asked to make true changes - they shift into “Yes, but”- hesitant -
resistent
Yes, but we always have done things this way, it worked before
Yes, change is need, but I’m not the one who has to change
Yes, but I really don’t see how I can possibly to this

Rempal found, even in the best reform-based schools, the school staff was never comprised
of more than 25% “leaders”
Bob Fender (New Leaders for New Schools) - Leaders constantly send the message all children
are capable of academic success; responsibility of teachers to help them succeed - really
thinks all kids can learn
reflective - you are never the perfect teachers, there are always areas to grow and learn
often leaders need to be encouraged “to harness the leader within”
