GLOBAL MOBILE SECURITY GAP:
METHODOLOGY
Study conducted via global omnibus surveys by phone and online during October 2010 with more than
6,000 smartphone and tablet users from a pool of 16,000 consumers.
Surveyed respondents in 16 countries, including United States, Canada, Brazil, UK, France, Germany,
Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, China, India, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.
Study conducted by opinion polling firms KRC Research and Synovate on behalf of Juniper Networks.
Synovate’s Global Omnibus unites the world’s best omnibus providers in 55 countries, 44 of which use
randomized, computer-assisted telephone interviewing in order to ensure a consistent methodology
and efficient sample management. In countries where cultural norms and/or socioeconomic conditions
require a face to face approach, door-to-door interviewing is employed using the random-route
method. In Canada and the U.S. where online penetration is very high, an online omnibus approach is
used with nationally representative samples. The interviews themselves consist of non-competing
client-specific questions and a shared set of standard demographics.
Global Omnibus survey results are tabulated by one standard global demographic banner and one
country-specific demographic banner. The standard banner includes gender, age, marital status, child
in household, and employment status. Other available demographic data will vary by country, but most
include region, education, and a social class indicator such as income, social grade, or socio-
economic status (SES).
Tabulations are provided in weighted format. Weights are derived individually for each country based
upon appropriate demographic variables and information provided by its statistical bureau.

  • 13. GLOBAL MOBILE SECURITY GAP: METHODOLOGY Study conducted via global omnibus surveys by phone and online during October 2010 with more than 6,000 smartphone and tablet users from a pool of 16,000 consumers. Surveyed respondents in 16 countries, including United States, Canada, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, China, India, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. Study conducted by opinion polling firms KRC Research and Synovate on behalf of Juniper Networks. Synovate’s Global Omnibus unites the world’s best omnibus providers in 55 countries, 44 of which use randomized, computer-assisted telephone interviewing in order to ensure a consistent methodology and efficient sample management. In countries where cultural norms and/or socioeconomic conditions require a face to face approach, door-to-door interviewing is employed using the random-route method. In Canada and the U.S. where online penetration is very high, an online omnibus approach is used with nationally representative samples. The interviews themselves consist of non-competing client-specific questions and a shared set of standard demographics. Global Omnibus survey results are tabulated by one standard global demographic banner and one country-specific demographic banner. The standard banner includes gender, age, marital status, child in household, and employment status. Other available demographic data will vary by country, but most include region, education, and a social class indicator such as income, social grade, or socio- economic status (SES). Tabulations are provided in weighted format. Weights are derived individually for each country based upon appropriate demographic variables and information provided by its statistical bureau. 13 Copyright © 2009 Juniper Networks, Inc. www.juniper.net
