Poll 		 What is an exceptionality?
Gifted Children  Many different definitions of gifted  a child with a gift, or a special talent in a certain area as having a high IQ which usually determines how successful you will be in the future giftedness in childhood must be nurtured so that the child will be successful in their adult years
Gifted Children Different behaviors of gifted children: Gifted children learn basic skills better, faster, and require less practice learn to read earlier than their peers & have good comprehension can work alone on tasks & stay focused for longer periods of time enjoy learning new things & are willing to to examine unfamiliar material
Gifted Children Different ways to teach & accommodate gifted children Projects Journaling learning stations book reports
Learning Disabilities Learning disability- a disability in which there is a discrepancy between a person’s ability and academic achievement; individual possesses average intelligence There are many different types of learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, non-verbal learning disorder, and auditory learning disorder.
Signs of Learning Disabilities in Young Children Difficulty learning new skills  Trouble learning time Difficulty remembering facts Confusing basic words Poor coordination Spelling and reading errors such as substitutions, letter reversal, inversions, and transpositions
Teaching Tools Outline lesson for that day in detail  Reduce course load Pace instruction to the student  Use props and write large and clear Provide memory strategies  Ask questions Communication  Video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi-Vut9VH6Y 
Speech Disorders A speech disorder is the “inability to produce speech sounds correctly or fluently” Four major types of speech disorders	 Apraxia of Speech, Dysarthia, Speech Sound Disorders and Voice. 	 No major reason as to why these occur According to the National Institute of Deafness and other Communication disorders, “roughly 8 to 9 percent of young children have a speech disorder”
Speech Disorders How is a speech disorder found?	 Speech screenings and testing  Usually then referred to a speech pathologist How do they effect children? School setting Communication is the basis of education Do children have options?	 Yes, can choose to either attend speech therapy or not attend any type of therapy and cope alone
Discussion Questions	 If you had a child with a learning or speech exceptionality, how would you accommodate for that child?  Would having gifted children in the classroom benefit the regular students in the class? Would it hurt the gifted students? What are some ideas or experiences you have in regards to educating students with learning disabilities?
