HIV/AIDS is not going away or slowing down unless we take action.
African nations are not the only ones who should worry, HIV doesn’t discriminate.
This shouldn’t be taken lightly!!!
For this Presentation, imagine that you have been diagnosed with HIV and consider the
impact on your life on those who care about you.

Description
HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. It is the virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS.
CDC estimates that about 56,000 people in the United States contracted HIV in 2006.
HIV damage a person’s body by destroying specific blood cells, called CD4+ T cells, which are crucial to helping the body
fight disease
AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection, Before the development of certain medications, people with HIV could progress to
AIDS in just a few years. Currently, people can live much longer - even decades - with HIV before they develop AIDS. This
is because of “highly active” combinations of medications that were introduced in the mid 1990s.

Signs and symptoms
Within a few weeks of being infected with HIV, some people develop flu-like symptoms that last for a week or two, but
others have no symptoms at all.
People living with HIV may appear and feel healthy for several years. However, even if they feel healthy, HIV is still
affecting their bodies.

DX Diagnosis
The most commonly used HIV tests detect HIV antibodies – the substances the body creates in response to becoming
infected with HIV.
It can take some time for the immune system to produce enough antibodies for the test to detect, this time is called the
“window period” During this time, the HIV virus transmition may be very high.
Most people will develop antibodies that can be detected by the most commonly used tests in the United States within
2 to 8 weeks of their infection. 97% will develop detectable antibodies in the first 3 months.

Treatment
three major treatments: reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors, protease inhibitors and fusion inhibitors.
Every person who is HIV positive must work with his doctor to determine a treatment plan that is
tailored specifically to them. HIV carriers may require a mixture of the three medications listed
*
Aftermath
The cost of care for an HIV/AIDS patient can grow to be astronomical, putting families in a difficult
position financially
While current medications can dramatically improve the health of people living with HIV and slow
progression from HIV infection to AIDS, existing treatments need to be taken daily for the rest of a
person’s life, need to be carefully monitored, and come with costs and potential side effects. At this
time, there is no cure for HIV infection
Mothers will have a high risk of passing the virus to their new born baby.

Celebrities
Freddie Mercury from the band Queen
October 8th was the last time Freddie Mercury performed on stage. At the time, he was terribly ill with AIDS, although
he didn't want people to know about it. He announced that fact the day before he died. Being ill he continued to
compose and record songs and even took part in making videos

Magic Johnson Laker Great
After announcing his infection in November 1991, Johnson created the Magic Johnson Foundation to help combat HIV.
He was also the main speaker for the United Nations (UN) World AIDS Day Conference in 1999,[100] and has served as a
United Nations Messenger of Peace
6. HIV had been associated with drug addicts and homosexuals,[99] but Johnson's campaigns sought to show that the risk of
infection was not limited to those groups. Johnson stated that his aim was to "help educate all people about what [HIV]
is about" and teach others not to "discriminate against people who have HIV and AIDS"
To prevent his HIV infection from progressing to AIDS, Johnson takes a daily combination of drugs and has his own
nutritionist and works out but. He has lived with HIV for over 20 years but not all cases are like his.

DID YOU KNOWS
The first cases of AIDS were reported in the US in June of 1981. Since then, 1.7 million people in the
U.S. are estimated to have been infected with HIV, including over 619,000 who have already died
HIV is spread primarily by:
Not using a condom when having sex with a person who has HIV. All
unprotected sex with someone who has HIV contains some risk
Sharing needles, syringes, rinse water, or other equipment used to prepare illicit
drugs for injection.
Being born to an infected mother—HIV can be passed from mother to child
during pregnancy, birth, or breast-feeding.
7. Less common modes of transmission include:
Being “stuck” with an HIV-contaminated needle or other sharp object. This risk
pertains mainly to healthcare workers.
There is an extremely remote chance that HIV could be transmitted during
“French” or deep, open-mouth kissing with an HIV-infected person if the HIV-
infected person’s mouth or gums are bleeding.
*
HIV cannot reproduce outside the human body. It is not spread by:
Air or water.
Insects, including mosquitoes. Studies conducted by CDC researchers and
others have shown no evidence of HIV transmission from insects.
Saliva, tears, or sweat. There is no documented case of HIV being transmitted
by spitting.
Casual contact like shaking hands or sharing dishes.
Closed-mouth or “social” kissing.

National Statistics
an average of 40,000 to 80,000 new cases of HIV are reported each year in the U.S.
Among reported AIDS cases in adolescents 13 to 19, 50% occur in African Americans, 28% in Caucasians and
20% in Hispanics
9. ESTIMATED RATE OF NEW HIV INFECTIONS, 2009, BY GENDER
AND RACE/ETHNICITY
*
It is estimated that half of all new infections are among people younger than 25.
Estimated Number of Diagnoses of HIV
Age (Years)
Infection, 2009
Under 13 166
Ages 13-14 21
Ages 15-19 2,036

Conclusion
This can happen to anyone!!! Don’t think that just because your young it cant effect you.
Think twice before you sleep with someone and avoid one night stands.
Always use condoms and oral sex is still dangerous. Life is hard enough without a serious disease to bring you down.
Spread the word to the coming generations, let them know that HIV/AIDS must be controlled and it all starts with
awareness and prevention.
