Kamo’s Heritage –
Just a thing of the past?
What do special places & heritage contribute to
our district and to Kamo?
• a sense of place, identity and continuity, contributing to the overall
amenity or character of an area
• connections between past, present and future as an area
progresses so that recognised heritage values can ‘live on’
• reminders of the past (including persons and places of note and
significant events)
• the revival and sharing of past experiences through modern means
of story telling
• a source of information on styles and technologies of the past
• interest for visitors, including associated economic opportunities.
How does the community want to
celebrate Kamo’s heritage?
a)

Do nothing; or

b) Rely on NZHPT to identify and assess items of significance
for protection under District Plan; or
c) Seek a comprehensive district-wide review of all District Plan
heritage provisions; or
d) Adopt a combination of statutory and non -statutory
methods including:
•
listing of significant items
•
special character areas
•
heritage guidelines
•
heritage trails or story boards
•
regular community events
Statutory Obligations
Resource Management Act 1991:
• Matters of national importance including:
(f) the protection of historic heritage from
inappropriate subdivision, use and development
• Definition of ‘historic heritage’
• Functions of regional and territorial local authorities in
preparing and changing regional and district plans.
