Ocean pollution is caused by the influx of industrial and domestic wastewater, oil spills from ships, and dumping of wastes into the ocean. Oil spills can cause fish and marine mammal deaths by shock or inhibited respiration, destroy mangroves and seaweeds, and damage marine ecosystems. Dumping of waste can lead to marine organisms accidentally swallowing trash, waste scattering on beaches and drifting at sea, and waste accumulating on the ocean floor. The influx of contaminated wastewater deteriorates marine organisms' immunity and can cause deformed organisms, as well as affect human health through consumption of contaminated fish and shellfish. International treaties aimed at addressing ocean pollution include the London Dumping Convention, MARPOL, UNC
