3. Progetti Piazza Garibaldi a Napoli
abbiamo considerato come prioritario riflettere
dell’Alta Velocità e all’estensione verso est della
e permeabilità all’acqua e alla luce.

The Quarter of the 5 Stations. The following five
stations are found within the Garibaldi area: the
Central Railway Station, the future High Speed
Station, the Circumvesuviana Station and the two
underground stations for line 1 and 2. In order to
move towards a solution to the complex congestion problems in this area, we considered it a priority to carefully consider a well-calibrated line of
action that would aim to reorganize the Quarter
of the 5 Stations and strengthen its transportation
resources.
The urban system of Garibaldi 1 + Garibaldi 2. The
connective fabric around the stations consists of
a circuit of urban spaces organized in a system:
Garibaldi 1 and Garibaldi 2. This makes it necessary to expand the project to a system consisting
of Garibaldi 1 + Garibaldi 2, particularly with an
eye to urban transformations related to the incoming and outgoing flows forecast by the High Speed
project and eastward extension of the city.
New traffic organization. Our project plans to
conserve and enhance the innate identity of the
place, while seeking to solve its major problems
with traffic congestion and the very fragmentary
use of the spaces by pedestrians. This project generates a kind of circuit around the entire Quarter
of the 5 Stations area that intensifies the dialectic between its two sides and may spur a positive
process of reactivating and redeveloping some
adjacent areas that are currently stagnant.
The Gallery, an underground urban space. The
underground piazza is also a gallery and open-air
passageway. We imagine the available space as
divided into an open part and a covered part: in
the northern part there is an open space of gardens, a play and rest area, and the Central Station
piazza; in the southern part, there is a covered
space, a large roof that protects the underground
piazza where pedestrian traffic mixes uses of diverse origins and purposes.
The great roof. The architectural presence of the
Central Station with its tower and large cantilever
roof is a fundamental value for Piazza Garibaldi.
The Station is here and forms a basic architectural
references for us. Our project for a great roof including both Garibaldi 1 and Garibaldi 2 originated and developed as a growth and transformation
of the theme of protection, refuge and cover. This
roof develops as a prismatic surface that shines
in the light based on different cladding solutions
of perforated metal with different densities and
degrees of permeability to water and light.
A project in phases. The progression of the entire
project has been planned in phases: the first phase
includes building the underground station line 1,
the gallery, the square and the large roof (2010), in
that order; the second phase includes completing
the project that specifically pertains to Garibaldi
1; and the third phase includes completing the
Garibaldi 2 system.
