Matthew Perry, a U.S. naval captain, led an expedition to Japan in 1853 to force the Japanese government to open trade. Through the use of intimidating naval displays, Perry convinced Japan to sign the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854, opening trade between the two nations. This treaty contributed to Japan's modernization and transition from isolation to becoming a world power, culminating in its victory in the Russo-Japanese War.
