Elementary School Teacher By: KarleyFiesel Online B-Lundquist
Introduction to Career Elementary school teachers (also called primary school teachers) teach children from kindergarten up to the sixth grade. They introduce children to the educational basics: numbers, language, science, and social studies. They also help children develop into healthy, confident, socially aware young people, and work closely with parents to help the children reach their full potential.
Nature of Work Elementary school teachers usually work independently, in classrooms of 15 to 30 students. Teachers work a 9 to 10-month school year, with 2 or 3 months off over the summer. Teachers work between 8 and 10 hours a day on weekdays.
Working Qualifications All elementary school teachers have to be licensed. All teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree. All must have to complete an approved teacher education program and a period of supervised practice teaching.
Training, Qualifications, & Advancement Four year College/University. Elementary teachers should enjoy spending time with children. They should be patient, calm, and understanding. They should also be good at motivating people and recognizing how individual students can differ. Teachers must be good communicators who work well with teaching staff, support staff, parents, and other members of the community.
Job Outlook/Employment Certification is voluntary, and is available through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). To become nationally certified, candidates submit a portfolio of work and pass a written exam. In many states and school districts, teachers with national certification receive higher salaries or other benefits.
Earnings Elementary school teachers are employed by public school boards or by private schools. Most public school teachers belong to unions that negotiate wages, benefits, hours, and conditions of employment on their behalf. Experienced elementary school teachers typically earn $35,000 to $80,000 a year. The average starting salary is around $32,000 a year. Public school teachers tend to earn more than private school teachers
Uses of Technology in Career Elementary School Teachers often use Computers, in a computer lab for example, to teach them how to type and to play educational games. Elementary School Teachers often use CD players, for example, to listen to educational music that might teach them how to count or spell. Elementary School Teachers often use television to, for example, show the children educational videos that teach them how to count, spell, or read.
Summary I think this is a great job if you really enjoy working with children. You get to work with them for hours everyday and then you also get the satisfaction of knowing that they look up to you to teach them what they need to know for the rest of their life.
